What do you think of Luan

Struggling to think of a boy's name for DC3. DH is Albanian, and this is an Albanian name which I've got sort of stuck on. It means 'lion'. What does everyone think? And does anyone have any suggestions for middle names?

We had originally wanted to use his grandad's name as a middle name, because DC2 has my grandad's as his, but his grandad is called Asllan - so we're a bit worried about having an overly lion themed name!

I quite like it. It's easy to say and spell.

Asllan is a bit much for a first name I agree.

Can you use a name from your family as a middle name? I think it's nice when they mean something.

I was at school with a girl called Luan - I've never heard of another.
To me it's very feminine but that's probably only because of the one I knew.

ofwarren · 02/09/2022 19:05

It's a girls name to me

FayCarew · 02/09/2022 19:05

Is it pronounced Loon/Lou-Anne? type questions

Violettaa · 02/09/2022 19:07

I think it’s a fantastic sounding name, and lion is a great meaning.

I’ve not come across it before, but it doesn’t sound feminine to me.

Mydogatemypurse · 02/09/2022 19:08

I think its fabulous

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 02/09/2022 19:09

Its a girl’s name in America, and one of the characters in the childrens TV show The Loud House.
Otherwise sounds fine.

LynneBenfield · 02/09/2022 19:11

Luan just makes me think of the Real Housewives of New York, but I’m not very highbrow.

RuthW · 02/09/2022 19:15

The only Luan I know is a girl.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 02/09/2022 19:17

In Irish it means Monday.

How is it pronounced in Albania?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 02/09/2022 19:18

How would it be pronounced?

Ship · 02/09/2022 19:19

I also know it from the loud house and the film dangerous minds. Both of the characters are female. If I heard the name I would think it was a girl Lou-Anne

zen1 · 02/09/2022 19:19

I know a boy called Luan with zero connection to Albania! I like the name, but I also really like Asllan.

Iwantyourmidnights · 02/09/2022 20:04

Thanks all for your opinions! Interesting that so many see it as a feminine name. When DH pronounces it the vowels are quite short and hard sounding if that makes sense. But in my very English accent it sounds more like Ewan, which I suppose is how it would be more commonly pronounced by non-Albanian speakers in the UK!

I have a friend called Luan. Female mid 40s. I would avoid because of that.

LegoFiends · 02/09/2022 20:12

I know a Brazilian boy called Luan and English speakers assume he’s a girl.

TooMinty · 02/09/2022 20:41

It might be more easily accepted in Scotland where the name Euan is quite common (although people would forever mishear and miss out the L probably!)

sonjadog · 02/09/2022 20:42

Makes me think of Monday. But if you don’t mind that, then it is okay.

ballerinatina · 02/09/2022 20:42

I love the name, I would say it's a unisex name

I also like Loic and Mateo

Springdaisy · 02/09/2022 20:46

We live in Switzerland atm and its a name thats becoming quite popular here. Ive only heard it as a boys name.

Mushroomlady · 02/09/2022 20:47

Luan feels like a boy's name to me. I really like it!! It's lovely to say. It's mellifluous.

Iwantyourmidnights · 02/09/2022 21:09

@Mushroomlady a lot of Albanian names are I think!

Never heard it before. I think it's quite nice.

UnityO · 04/09/2022 11:06

I love the sound of it but would assume it's a girl's name because the 2 (Luan & Luann) that I know are both female.

mathanxiety · 04/09/2022 22:09

Love it.
It's also an Irish name related to the ancient Irish god Lugh.
