Thoughts on Khushi for a girl?

Khushi means happiness in Hindi! Love the meaning, I’m not so sure what non-Hindi speakers will make of the sound? Opinions?
pronounced Kh-u-shee (u is like the “oo” sound in Whoosh).

I taught a Khushi recently. I had no problem with the sound and it is actually easier to pronounce than a lot of names I come across! I think it's nice.

lovesunshine247 · 21/08/2022 09:42

That's a lovely name!

Krakinou · 21/08/2022 09:55

It’s ok but it sounds like “cushy”. (Google says cushy is actually Anglo-Indian slang derived from Khushi so I learned something new today :) ). But I feel like “cushy” has slightly negative connotations.

Makes me think of someone either lazy/entitled or a walkover. I don’t think it’s a big deal if you really like the name - it sounds quite sweet and “happiness” is a lovely meaning. But it’s enough to stop me liking it.

amrita89 · 21/08/2022 12:17

@Krakinou Thanks for pointing this out! It does put me off a little bit, it does sound very much like “cushy” which I’m not too happy about!

I don't like the sound of it.

Johnnysgirl · 21/08/2022 12:21

It sounds like someone calling a cat.

Bernadinetta · 21/08/2022 12:26

Kush is a type of cannabis

Kangaruby · 21/08/2022 12:28

Kushi in one european language means "woman's hairy vulva". PLEASE do not call your child this name if you think they might ever want to travel to mainland europe!!

amrita89 · 21/08/2022 12:38

@IceCreamTime19 I had no idea!! So important to ask on here, I’m glad you mentioned this.
It’s a very popular contemporary name in India & I always loved the beautiful meaning but obviously it needs to work internationally.

Yeah this was my first thought too, sorry.

DotDotDotDotDot · 21/08/2022 13:50

Yes back to the drawing board I think op. I’m sure there’s lots of other lovely Indian girls names that could work.
I actually thought of cushty - Del Boy style!

SommerTen · 21/08/2022 13:53

Sounds like the Romany word Cushty as in 'all Cushty mate'.

LittleBearPad · 21/08/2022 13:55

I thought of Cushty though in the DelBoy context.

Its a pity as it is pretty

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/08/2022 14:44

Nah. For all of the reasons above

I wonder if this is where coochie/cooch comes from.

badbaduncle · 21/08/2022 14:47

I wouldn't but it my community Kush is strong cannabis

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/08/2022 14:49

Are you yourself Hindu or have an Indian background? If it was just a random name plucked from another language that wouldn't be great.

PhotoDad · 21/08/2022 14:51

Several girls named Khushi and a couple of boys called Khush at the school where I teach. I didn't know any of the slang references!

Kanaloa · 21/08/2022 14:56

Agree with others that while it’s a lovely Hindi name it simply doesn’t work internationally (for me anyway!) I always think you need to consider your child and how their life will be. There are so many pretty Hindi names that it seems a shame to pick one that has all these bad connotations in Europe, where the child will presumably live most of their life.
