Sister for Theo

Baby20222 · 19/08/2022 20:26

DC2 due in a couple of a weeks and we're still completely stuck for a girls name, it's tougher than I thought! We want something pretty, but not toooo popular. Our DC1 is named Theodore, we call him Theo.

Names we love that are just too popular: Amelia, Isla, Eve, Matilda, Lyra, Ella

Names we love, but not that keen on the potential nicknames: Florence (Flo, Flossie, don't mind Florrie so much), Clementine (Clemmie, Clem)

Names that we love, but don't work with our surname (too botanical!!): Poppy, Lily, Hollie

Any suggestions gratefully received!!

We do really like Ottilie...and Octavia too which I think is similar, but we're worried about whether they might be a bit pretentious...what does everyone think? 🤔

The Theodore I know has a sister named Millicent/Milly. I always thought they went together really nicely. Really Theodore is a nice name which could fit with lots of different names for a sister. I would choose something that’s equally as versatile.

Eleanor
Olivia
Isabelle
Lucia/Lucille
Caitlin
Emily/Emilia
Harriet
Liliana

I think Milly is sweet, and we were thinking it could be the nickname for Amelia too...

Honestly I love Theo with Lyra or Isla off your list - I wouldn't over think the popularity thing, just pick a name you love. I've only met one kid with each of those names (a 3yr old Lyra and a 9yr old Isla) and you could easily pick another name that accidently becomes popular in a year or two.

If you really want to avoid them though other ideas:
Maia
Zara
Cora

I think I just really like names ending with -a to go with Theo!

Ah we are torn about how much attention to pay to these lists if we do really love a name...I just think back to being at school, and if your name was Katie/Emma/Sarah you'd definitely have to be known by your full name as there would be at least 1 other in the class!!

Theo is massively popular, so the obvious choice is Sophia.
Theo shows up lower in the top baby names because some are registered as Theodore
Sophia is the same, with the Sofia spelling also popular

😂😂 yes, fair! We didn't think Theo would be so popular when we chose it a couple of years ago, I think that's why we're so interested in these lists now!!

I'm only pregnant with my first but pretty set on names if we were to have one of each:

Theo & Tahlia

MrsSteveHarrington · 21/08/2022 12:36

Beware lists. When I called my son his name it was pretty unusual. Within a couple of years it was right at the top.
I have a very common name. Actually now as an adult I don’t mind so much. But then I have never really wanted to stand out.
I kind of wanted to be Sophie , Olivia or Emily at school as felt very unusual. Now of course much more popular than my own name.

Eliode2000 · 21/08/2022 14:30

Not Thea.

Kanaloa · 21/08/2022 23:24

I’m not too keen on Octavia although I’ve always thought it would be a cool name for a pet tarantula like Madame Octa in the Darren Shan books.

Ottilie is nice enough. Not particularly pretentious, just a normal ish name.
