What do you all think of Ondine? I find it elegant and love that it’s not too common.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Lovely.

MeanderingGently · 01/08/2022 18:31

Oh this is a beautiful name, very seldom heard these days. Reminds me of the ballet, Ondine, a water sprite. Absolutely lovely!

theclangersarecoming · 01/08/2022 18:40

Reminds me of the ballet, too, but isn’t it a terribly tragic story? I would worry a bit about the rather melancholic story background!

AllPlayedOut · 01/08/2022 18:42

I immediately thought of Ondine's Curse so I'm not a fan.

Bpickle1 · 01/08/2022 18:44

It’s a seafood restaurant in Edinburgh. www.ondinerestaurant.co.uk

AllPlayedOut · 01/08/2022 18:44

I doubt that many people will be familiar with Ondine's Curse though but it immediately came to mind.

ReeseWitherfork · 01/08/2022 18:46

I‘m not familiar with the name but thought the word sounded like an ointment of some sort.

PancakesWithCheese · 01/08/2022 19:16

Reminds me of ‘Ondine’s curse’. But then I’m a nurse and have known patients with it.

I taught a pupil with it.

orangeisthenewpuce · 01/08/2022 20:05

I thought it sounded like a mouthwash. Sorry OP.

User2145738790 · 01/08/2022 21:57

If you're naming a new medicine, it sounds ok. Not for a baby.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 01/08/2022 22:09

It's the name of one of the English Commonwealth Games Gymastics team - Ondine Achampong. I really like the name, and have never heard of Ondine's Curse.

That was my very first thought.

VenusClapTrap · 01/08/2022 22:19

It’s beautiful. Very elegant.

blameitonthecaffeine · 01/08/2022 22:57

Have you been watching the gymnastics or is it just coincidence that you've posted this this week? I've never heard of anyone else with this name apart from Ondine Achampong. I think it's quite pretty but I would assume a baby was named after her. Maybe I'm giving the sport too much clout though, idk.

Kanaloa · 01/08/2022 23:02

I don’t like it. I don’t think it has a nice sound and it sounds sort of medicinal to me, or like a cleaning product.

If you want a house that’s squeaky clean
Buy a big box of Ondine
Cleans the windows, cleans the floors
Smells clean and fresh when it pours

MarmiteCoriander · 01/08/2022 23:07

Sorry, I too initially thought of the medical condition too, then thought it sounded similar to iodine or a cleaning product.

What do you like about the name specifically? Any others you like? Do you like Odette?

MarmiteCoriander · 01/08/2022 23:08

@Kanaloa cross post re cleaning product!

@Kanaloa cross post re cleaning product!

😂

There must be a cleaning product with a similar name we’ve both thought of maybe? Or just the fact that it has that sound like iodine although I didn’t think of that.

It’s not my favourite name to be honest. Like yeah you don’t hear it often but I think sometimes there’s a reason Bella is popular and Gaynor isn’t.

Rowen32 · 01/08/2022 23:15

I thought it was iodine when I read it first, definitely sounds like an ointment or tincture to me 🙈

toastofthetown · 02/08/2022 09:01

I do follow gymnastics, and I love Ondine as gymnast, as well as her name! I didn’t mention her in my OP as I wasn’t sure if I find the name an elegant name because I find Ondine an elegant gymnast and didn’t want to sway responses.

The Ondine’s curse doesn’t bother me too much; Amelia and Edward are both associated with medical conditions and are popular names, and I don’t think Ondine’s curse is well known enough to be a problem.

you beat me to it!

SummaLuvin · 02/08/2022 09:08

Not a name a love, nor a name I particularly dislike. Though I have thoroughly enjoyed her performance at the CWG thus far. Probably a good option if you wish to avoid abbreviations, and I can’t think of any that seem natural or intuitive.
