Just ask. Say ´oh, I’ve not seen that name before. How do I say it?’ You’ll get the speech about why they chose it plus their preferred pronunciation.

Emarjha · 21/07/2022 10:15

Hahaha, is this a wind up or is some poor kid really saddled with that name?

NiqueNique · 21/07/2022 10:18

True, it’s got to be a wind up...

Julie each and every time

Not likely for a bout.

@CornishPastyPirate if I HAD to guess I'd say jools, but is there any need for you to say it until she does?

Ontopofthesunset · 21/07/2022 10:33

Well, the apostrophe must be doing something in the name, even if only in the minds of the parents, so I would imagine you will have to say it Joo-lez as two syllable - assuming the apostrophe is signalling a new syllable, though that isn't really what apostrophes do. It wouldn't be Jools even without the apostrophe as there is an e before the z so you have to pronounce the last syllable 'ez'.

k1233 · 21/07/2022 10:43

If you google pronunciation of Jou’lez, you really only get Jou which in Dutch and a couple of other languages is pronounced (phonetically) as Yo. Doing the same, but for Lez by itself in French and Dutch it is pronounced Lay

So I'd guess you'd pronounce it Yo Lay.

Hotenoughtoburnasausage · 21/07/2022 10:47

Yo lay
After the conception position!!

Thursday37 · 21/07/2022 10:48

I wouldn't bother - block her number and pretend you have never met her before if you see her anyway. No-one needs to be associated with someone that thinks that is an appropriate name for a child!

CornishPastyPirate · 21/07/2022 11:51

Goodness this has made me laugh
anyway
i was brave I asked, yes I got the ‘arnt you silly for not knowing’ response
she says it’s jooles! But also jo-lay but she uses jooles ?
my next question would be ‘ but why?’ But I really don’t want to loose my head today!

Don't worry you'll soon get used to it. Jou'lez Eggs?

PancakesWithCheese · 21/07/2022 12:05

She’s going to find that no one knows how to pronounce it. Ever.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/07/2022 12:05

I think it’d be like someone saying Julie in a broad Lancashire accent.

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 21/07/2022 12:07

Poor child might one day google his own name to see if there are any others, and come across this.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/07/2022 12:10

Poor kid.

I would never get Joules from that. Joo lezz is what I see unless I knew they were French or something.
