Alfie or Sebastian (Baz)?

Ladies, I need help urgently!

Currently being induced, 16 hours and counting at the maternity ward so got some time in my hands. Still haven't decided on the name for our second boy (first boy called Leo).

We are stuck between Alfie and Sebastian. My issue is that I don't like "Seb" as nickname... our Leo is just Leo in the passport, so it's not a shortened name. This is why I like Alfie, it would be Alfie in the passport too if we decide on the name. I KNOW it is popular but I honestly don't know anyone called that at all, so I'm not put off. I also think it goes with Leo.

Sebastian is also really nice but I don't like "Seb" shortened, I've googled and seen that you could also nickname Sebastian "Baz".

What do people think? Last name starts with "S" and is 2 syllables.

We need to decide quickly as we need to get the passport done asap to go back to the UK (we live abroad).

Thankful for all honest comments :)

I really like Alfie. I hear it's very popular now, but like you, don't know of any myself

I also like Sebastian and the nn Seb. Not keen on Baz as to me it sounds like a very informal nickname for Barry - like when I was a kid any boy called Barry would be called Baz or Bazza by the other boys. But it's what you like that matters!

I would also be wary of giving one child a long name when the other has a short name. But that's speaking as someone with a one syllable name who always wanted a long one I could play with more and make lots of nicknames from. Not everyone cares about that and I've heard many with long names say they would have preferred a shorter one...

Cameronnorrieisabitofalright · 13/07/2022 13:41

Imo you must never call your ds Baz..

Honaloulou · 13/07/2022 13:42

Baz is dreadful.

Alfie is naff but unobjectionable.

AppleHa · 13/07/2022 13:47

Love Sebastian.
Baz sounds like a punk or skinhead character in the kind of earnest and dreadfully written plays we had to act out at Sunday school in the 1980s.
BAZ: ‘And over yer money missus!
OLD LADY: Eek! Have you considered taking Jesus into your life?

SunStruck · 13/07/2022 13:51

😂😂 love you ladies! Baz is off the cards then! Thanks so much I was really decided on Alfie but both set of grandparents hate the name so it got me a bit unsure! All friends like Alfie though. I KNOW it shouldn't matter but you know how it is, Obviously don't want to give the child a name most people hate from the get-go...

Sebastian is lovely and I like Baz.

Alfie is awful although I like Alfred.

Narcheska · 13/07/2022 15:12

I like both. Alfie is very popular at the
moment so I wouldn’t worry about people
Not liking it.

although I slightly prefer Sebastian but would go Bastian as nn like never even being story

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 13/07/2022 15:25

I’m not fond of Seb either. The Sebastian I know is Bas (not Baz).
He’s Dutch, though.

Sebastian is a lovely name, but I think Seb is inevitable.

I’m not keen on Alfie… too nicknamey. Nice for a boy, but less so on a man.

midsomermurderess · 13/07/2022 15:33

What about Bastien. It’s used as a shortening for the French name.

Lindy2 · 13/07/2022 15:36

Too many Alfies - and the ones I know all seem to be real mischief makers. 🤣

Sebastian is a great name. Seb or Sebby are nice for nicknames. I'm not really drawn to Baz - I'm getting an 80s boy band feel from it, which is good.

Lindy2 · 13/07/2022 15:37
  • isn't good not is good!
emmathedilemma · 13/07/2022 16:19

Baz is a middle aged, darts throwing, football top wearing bloke known only to his mum as Barry!
Alfie is cute on a little kid but we had one at work recently and it just seemed like such a childish name for an adult. If you don't want a shortened name than Alfie is technically a shortening of Alfred.
How about......
Leo & Finn
Leo & Max
Leo & James
Leo & Oscar
Leo & Jack
Leo & Seth
Leo & Rhys
Leo & Noah
Leo & Jake

ChagSameachDoreen · 13/07/2022 16:20

Sebastian nicknamed Baz.

Alfie is passé.

RealHousewifeOfEastLondon · 13/07/2022 16:21

Alfie is lovely even if it is popular.

Sebastian is one of my favourite boy names (DH vetoed!) but nickname Seb. Baz is terrible and to me short for Barry!

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoByAgain · 13/07/2022 16:24

Sorry but there are a LOT of Alfies who are currently 11-18 - and they tend to be white, a bit dumb and total gob shites

Rainbowshit · 13/07/2022 16:25

Baz is absolutely awful.

Bastian as a shortening is much nicer.

SirChenjins · 13/07/2022 16:28

Sebastian and Sen are lovely - Baz is awful. Less Lurhmann, more Dodgy Baz who can get you anything for 50 quid. Alfie is a bit overused imo, but it’s ok.

How about Magnus, Brodie or Odin? All brilliant names my horrible husband vetoed - and I’m determined that someone one day on MN will see sense and give one of them to their DS!

Underhisi · 13/07/2022 16:31

Baz is the brother of Gaz, Daz and Kaz.

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 13/07/2022 16:38

Sebastian is gorgeous. One of my faves. Baz is awful. Sorry. Bazza. No. Bastien sounds a tad pretentious but I still love it, and it's fine as a nickname. Alfie - every ddog round here is called Alfie or Oscar, so no to that too, for me.

est1899 · 13/07/2022 16:41

Sebastian is my pick but not with Baz. I know one with nickname Bash. Which is a bit better personally. But I also know one that goes by Sebastian with no nickname. It's possible.

Alfie is a 'naughty boy' name to me.

WarmJuly · 13/07/2022 16:41

Alfie is, I'm sorry to say, an awful name. Even Alfred is better.

There are lots of Sebastians called Seb and I don't mind that. I also think that there's nothing wrong with Baz.

Tom (Thomas)
Alex (Alexander)
Sam (Samuel)
Pip (Philip)
Kit (Christopher)
all go with Leo.

Please not Alfie, Archie, Freddie, Charlie and all the shortened names of proper names.

Leo is a name in its own right.

YorkshireIndie · 13/07/2022 17:15

My LO is Sebastian but has made it clear he prefers being called his full name at 2 🙈
We do not call him baz but will slip in to Seb/Sebbie

SummaLuvin · 13/07/2022 18:07

I really dislike Seb so wouldn't use Sebastian, no way to eliminate that possibility when he grows up and has ownership of his name, don't like Baz either, but I do really like Bash as a nickname.

Can't stand Alfie.

toastofthetown · 13/07/2022 18:14

I think Baz has a certain charm to it. We have a Basil in the family who we affectionately call Bas, and the name has really grown on me. And if he hates Baz he can change it later. Though if you hate Seb, I wouldn’t use Sebastian, as he might end up preferring that to Baz.

Alfie is a bit beige. Kind of interchangeable with Archie, Freddie, Teddy, Albie ad nauseam. Inoffensive but insubstantial.

Spanielsarepainless · 13/07/2022 18:16

Alfred is better. Baz is terrible.
