Baby girls names

So we’ve had our gender scan today and baby is girl!!
The first girl after two boys so I was shocked. We had a good list of boys names (Otis, Asa, Jude, Reggie) but not many girls names.

I can’t find a girls name I love. We both like Indie but I am aware that’s not a liked name on mumsnet. I like Lois and Eden, he likes Imogen.

I don’t really like old fashioned names or frilly girly names. She will more than likely not be a girly girl so something like Florence or Daisy won’t work. I also work in a school so anything top 30 is probably a no no as there will be one I'm reminded of from school!

I am aware I’m very fussy I just never envisioned having to choose a girls name!

Can anyone help me or is she destined to be named ‘baby’ forever! 😣

We can see this thread is quite old now but if you’ve landed here looking for baby naming inspo, our recently updated 1000 top girl names article may offer some ideas. Flowers

Why can't you go for Indie, if you both like it? Screw what random strangers on the internet think.
If you can imagine her suiting the name as a baby, as a teenager, as an adult - then go for it. She's your child.
Equally, you don't need to panic about a name whilst you're still pregnant. A lot of couples wait until baby has arrived to see which name they suit

Dreamingof3 · 02/07/2022 19:38

Agree with above, if you like Indie then use it....I really like it. I'd probably narrow it down to 2 or 3 and then when she arrives see which one feels right

Libmama · 02/07/2022 19:44

Yes we both like Indie although that’s the only one we can agree on.

DP likes Imogen but it will probably get shortened to Immy, and we already have an Isaac who gets shortened to Ikey so I think it’s a bit matchy…

I know we don’t need a name for a while yet but I am a very organised anal person and like to at least have a few decent ideas!

Go for Indie

Libmama · 02/07/2022 19:45

As I’ve just read that back though, Immy is no more matchy to Ikey than Indie is it!!! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Ignore me!!

I totally get the non girlie names. I'm 6ft and my daughter is likely to be similar. I just couldn't imagine a 6ft Lilly or Daisy etc.

We went with Cerys in the end and it suits her perfectly. Feminine without being overly girlie. We had settled on Eleanor but when she was born it just didn't suit her at all.

Perhaps have a top 3 and see what works when she is born

If you like 'I' names then maybe Iris? I know it's a flower name, but I find it a strong name - quite different to Lily or Poppy etc.

Well I love Lois, so I’d go with that - underused right now so get in early

Imogen is nice enough but a bit twee, Eden is a bit low rent, Indie very low rent.

I love Indie!

My girls are called Kendall and Brodie.
I also liked Tierney, Paisley and Jorgie.

I like names that are not overly girly. Probably because I'm not much of a girly girl myself. 🤦🏽‍♀️

bridgetreilly · 03/07/2022 00:22

Imogen nn Gen would be very cute.

I think Imogen is a great choice and love the abbreviations Mo or G/Jenny. Ikey and Mo sound good together.

I never understood the whole "wait till she's born to see what name she suits" thing. First off, she'll just look like a baby, she won't look like a specific name. And babies don't "suit names" anyway, it's the other way around. It's your perception of the name that suit the baby (or not). But since babies' traits and personnalities don't really show for a while, waiting for the baby to be born is pretty pointless. All it achieves is stressing out the parents because by then they're on a deadline as the baby needs to be named by X date - right when they're also sleep-deprived and otherwise busy.

So yeah OP I'd pick the name well in advance.

For what it's worth I like Indie but it sounds a bit nicknamey to me - how about a longer name like Indigo or Indira with Indie as a nickname ? I don't think it's too similar to Ikey.

Marni or Marla has a similar feel to Indie

mathanxiety · 03/07/2022 06:01

@SE13Mummy - no way should the OP consider a sibset called Ikey and Mo.

Ikey Mo is derogatory slang for a Jew.

Twizbe · 03/07/2022 08:15

@Penfelyn well we didn't know the sex of either of our babies before birth so had to wait to properly name them.

Plus as much as I loved the name Eleanor it just wasn't her when she was born. It felt wrong to call her that.

If you name before birth you're on a deadline too...

Merryclaire · 03/07/2022 10:26

I agree with the idea of Indigo affectionately shortened to Indie
