For August? What do you think?

I don't get this thing on MN for prescribed 'nicknames'. Surely a true nickname is one that evolves over time, not one assigned at birth? Consider shortened versions that might be used yes, although they usually evolve too in my experience, but this earnest assigning of nicknames to a baby who hasn't even got a name yet is, all a bit try-hard for me.

housemaus · 24/06/2022 23:51

Gus is cuter, surely? Augie is too close to 'orgy' for my liking.

IStandWithMaya · 24/06/2022 23:57

Just no

Toughtimesagain · 25/06/2022 00:02

He wont thank you. August isn’t a great name anyway _ unless you are upper eschelons of the Royal family; and even then you’d go with Gus (quite cool)

Kite22 · 25/06/2022 00:35

Awful, but then so is naming a child a month.

Absolutely this.

Awful, but then so is naming a child a month.

April, May & June are well established names. There maybe a reason why the others aren’t commonly used.

AuntTwacky · 25/06/2022 01:34

Eewwww

RedWingBoots · 25/06/2022 11:57

@Katypp it's parents trying to be controlling.

August is named after Augustus.

Also are you saying the common girls names of April, May and June are awful?

MassiveSalad22 · 25/06/2022 12:04

I like August as-is. If it was my kid they’d end up as Aug, not saying I like that but that’s what I’d end up calling them 😄

Auggie I think - Wonder - The Fault In Our Stars - this YouTuber I watch - Princess Eugenie - Orgy.

I like the name August but I know LOTS (proportionally of course. It’s no Oliver but for an ‘unusual’ name, I know 4 under 2.)

This comes up time and time again on MN. It’s quite clear the OP means a shortened version of the name. A nickname is something like Bean, Chubs, Stokesy, Pudding. Obviously they evolve naturally.

KirstenBlest · 25/06/2022 12:11

May was traditionally a diminutive of Mary

Not keen on April and June, and definitely not keen on August.

IRL I only know one April, one May and one June, so I wouldn't say they were common. The figures on darkgreener suggest they are not much used as first names

custardbear · 25/06/2022 12:45

August doesn't have a nice nick name IMO sorry

yui · 29/06/2022 16:49

Sounds awful IMO. Like a mix of "ugly" and "soggy".

You can't control what nicknames other people give your child anyway.

comealongponds · 01/07/2022 13:30

Auggie is horrific

Gus is much nicer

Ouchmytoe100 · 02/07/2022 08:52

I really don't like Auggie. It doesn't even sound right coming out of my mouth. It's really awkward and unnatural sounding. Gus is cool.

StressyMcStressFace · 24/06/2022 12:46

Oi oi oi!

Exactly

Lalosalamanca · 02/07/2022 08:55

Oi oi oi.

pinklavenders · 02/07/2022 18:13

I like August as it is. It's easy to say, just 2 syllables.

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/07/2022 23:12

Awful.

Whats wrong with Gus, if you need a nn

notacooldad · 02/07/2022 23:15

This is MN. Home if the incessant need for nicknames.
Absolutely.
Its absolutely bat shit crazy that people pick nicknames, usually not even close to the name that it is supposed to a shortened version of.
Clearly many do it for a reaction.

Katypp · 03/07/2022 09:47

I tend to agree with the poster upthread who said it was the parents being controlling.
There seems to be a need to micromanage every aspect of your child's life and show who's in charge even before they are born!

pinklavenders · 03/07/2022 13:38

Yes, why the need to pre plan potential nicknames?

If you like the name August, then use it! It's a great easy to say name.

Youcansaythatagainandagain · 03/07/2022 23:23

The boy in Wonder.

peaceinourtime · 04/07/2022 00:31

I think Aug is much nicer.
