Alternatives to Eve?

CoalCraft · 17/06/2022 07:43

9 weeks to go until baby girl is scheduled to join us. We've been calling her Eve and I think in all likelihood that'll be her name, but I'm just putting out some final feelers for alternatives.

DH and I both like Eve but neither of us love it. The trouble is I have quite narrow tastes and DH is very fussy - he's vetoed 90% of the things I've suggested (without coming up with any of the serious suggestions himself 🙄 )

I'm looking for traditional female names that don't end in a vowel sound. Things like Catherine, Elizabeth, Imogen (belong to family members), Jocelyn and Delores (vetoed by DH as too old fashioned). We toyed with Harriet for a while but prefer Eve.

Our first daughter is called Beatrix and DH thinks we peaked with that one. He can't see how we'd ever come up with something as nice!

Can anyone suggest alternatives? We're both happy with Eve but I just feel there's an even more perfect name out there I've missed.

Lois would be my number one choice - woefully underused

I think he's wrong that Jocelyn is old fashioned - about to come back I think

Eve is lovely but it really is done to death so I wouldn't

Frances
Elsbeth
Astrid
Caroline
Katharine
Marianne
Jane
Clare
Jean
Hope
Anne / Annis
Robin
Laurel
Louise
Ines

Iris, Edith, Rowan, Evelyn, Rose all good but also very overused

Verity, Esther or Eleanor?

Cheerybigbottom · 17/06/2022 15:14

I'll never have a daughter, but the name I always wanted to use was Evelyn (soft e, but hard e and nickname Eve would work).

MsTSwift · 17/06/2022 15:41

Thing is Evelyn’s always become Eves…

It’s a lovely name just too overused. Like all the names suggested! There are so many other perfectly lovely normal names as demonstrated yet still everyone just picks Eve! Baffling

Lois is a brilliant name

Lois is lovely.

I not keen on Eve, especially as your other DC has a fancier, grander sounding name. My sister has a name everyone describes as pretty and it has a nice nn.
I have a short name that I love now but it's more classic than pretty. I was jealous as a child!

CoalCraft · 17/06/2022 18:34

I do like Alice as a name, trouble is the only Alice I've really known was horrible! Also we have an Alan in the family and that's too many "Al"s 😁

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, really helpful. We are seriously considering Lois now. We really aren't bothered that Eve is apparently so popular but do like the sound of Lois more. Please keep the suggestions coming!

Eve is beautiful, one of my favourite names.

Lois is a bit funkier, more uncommon.

Naomi, although it ends with a vowel, would be another suggestion.

SE13Mummy · 18/06/2022 18:59

What about Miriam, Nell, Margot or Madeleine?

Barrachocolate · 18/06/2022 19:09

Felicity?

summerlovinvibes · 18/06/2022 19:13

@CoalCraft how about Martha?

mathanxiety · 18/06/2022 20:12

Beatrix is indeed gorgeous, and Lois goes beautifully with it Star

How about:
Tamsin
Ruth
Rachel
Melisande
Saskia (yes, vowel ending but has a simar feel to Beatrix imo)
Edith
Leonore
Elspeth
Laurel
Elowen
Marit

I love Eve and Evelyn. I’d be tempted to keep Eve and have a longer middle name.

collieresponder88 · 18/06/2022 20:26

Phoebe goes nicely

ElenaSt · 18/06/2022 20:30

Evie.

Undertheoldlindentree · 18/06/2022 21:07

Eve/Evie has been very popular for the last two decades in the UK. All my DC have several in their friendship groups and (like the Ellie's and Izzy's!), they always have to have surname or initial attached as there are so many. It's a bit like being a Claire, Sarah or Rachael in the 80's. You might not mind this, but it could mean Eve is a bit ageing in years to come. I was one of the last of a name that was very popular for twenty years before me and I've always felt my name is a bit frumpy because of that. Lois sounds a lot fresher than Eve to my ears!

If you're not entirely convinced by Lois, what about Eloise? Personally I think that goes better with Beatrix.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 18/06/2022 21:53

My first thought was Lois too. Beautiful name .
Niamh sounds most like Eve. Also pretty.
Similar vibe: Esther, Maeve, June, Rose, Eden, Elise
Maybe also consider: Mabel, Cleo

peaceinourtime · 20/06/2022 00:19

Another vote for Lois, its a lovely name.
