Elizabeth or Rose?

Currently trying to pick a baby name and Elizabeth and Rose are our two most favoured. Elizabeth has a very long history in my family, ranging from being used for a countess to modern day family members. It’s only ever used as a middle name in our family but I love it as a first. Rose is also a family name, however our family tends to use Rosina and Rosalie. I prefer just Rose as I think it’s sweeter short.

Unfortunately Rose doesn't go with our surname so it's off the list!

My DD is Rose Elizabeth and I absolutely love her name. As some PPs have said I think they're both beautiful feminine names but without being "pretty" or "frilly" - both sound strong to me. So I love both! But I'm biased

Much prefer Rose. I'd be happy to be a Rose!

I know a few Elizabeths and none of them like the name Elizabeth. They call themselves Beth (in her 40s), El (40s), and Liz (60s). In each case it was their decision as quite young children to shorten their name - their parents kept calling them Elizabeth. I still remember the day Beth announced to our class aged 6 that from now on she would be known as Beth and not Elizabeth. Liz says she finds the name Elizabeth too long and formal. I tend to agree.

I think you need to compare the shortenings of Elizabeth. I like Beth and Bethan and Lizzie but not keen on Liz but many looking for the grown up or sensible version go for that. Not hugely keen on Libby and Eliza seems very popular. I like Lisa but it's not fashionable is it at the moment. Far prefer Rose to Liz. But like Beth. I'm not sure about Rosa. It's pretty but everything has an a on the end at the moment. I think I prefer plainer but that may be a reaction to the tendency for longer names with a on the end at the moment. Sophia rather than Sophie. Lucia and Lucy. Etc. I do like the name Rosalind too. The roz names have been commandeered by the flower but originally was something to do with horses. In case that helps!

I love Elizabeth. It's a classic name and as others have said there are lots of options for shortened version which means you could pick one, but she could something different if she wanted to.

I think Elizabeth Rose is a great name - am not keen on Mary.

Rose is also a lovely name in its own right of course. I know quite a few young Rosalinds and Rosies but my favourite longer version is Rosamund. I'd probably go for that, and then use Rose or Rosie as a shortened version.

I love Irene as a name, but only when it's pronounced with 3 syllables.

Elizabeth. It's a nice strong name. I don't like Rose as a first name and despise it as a 2nd name.

I love both but rose is definately overused in my opinion.
DD2 was almost Elizabeth, NN would have been Betsy x

I have an Elizabeth who is at secondary school and has always been a Lizzie. It suits her. She only gets called Elizabeth by me and occasionally her friends as a joke. There aren't that many around although they are mostly Libbies.

Not too keen on Bethan or Libby. There are no Roses or Elizabeths near me as far as I know of, apart from Roise and Rosin. I live in Ireland, so Rose isn’t popular here at all as a first, only as a middle. I do like Lizzie, Liz and Beth is starting to grow on me. Eliza is nice but for some reason it’s reminding me of Elijah.

I should add on I‘m also not too keen on Rosa. If we decide on Rose, husband wants Rosie as an nn but I’m still preferring Rose to Rosie. Rosie is nice but it has a certain image in my head and I’m not too sure about it.

I'd go with Elizabeth and let the nickname come over time. She will choose herself what she prefers at some point.

Madeleine was another option we had - any opinions on it? I’m fairly sure we’re still sticking with Rose or Elizabeth but it’s also a name I really love. Maybe if we have a second girl. 😂

I love Madeline but I can't get passed the McCann connection, even though connections don't usually bother me. But then my girls are both blonde with blue eyes 😭

I actually didn’t think of the connection with her - such a pretty name but I wouldn’t use it if it brought up that connection for people. 😬
