You can call anyone whatever nickname you want, from Titch to Smelly, to Sugar Tits, or Buttercup. It doesn't have to be anything to do with their name. Nicknames often come from a child's actions, or personality, or a misunderstanding or mispronunciation when they were little.

If you are asking what Ernie is shortened from, then it is Ernest.
