Somewhat to my surprise, I really rather like Ursula.

NetballHoop · 03/05/2022 20:55

While I quite like Ursula, I can't get past that St Ursula was sent to marry a chap in Armorica. She sailed off with 11,000 virgins and survived a sea storm so great that she decided to march across Europe to get a papal blessing. She and the 11,000 marched back across Europe via Cologne where all 11,000 were beheaded and she was eventually shot with an arrow.

Where you'd have found 11,000 virgins in the South West of Britain during the 380ish AD period remains a mystery.

Ursula
Ebony
Raven

Nice names and a good strong foil esp if paired with something quite vanilla. I disagree on the colouring point and think they’d would work nicely for anyone.

Lilith was a demon (I think satan’s wife in the Old Testament?). There’s Lots of ribbing about that on Frazier if you’ve ever watched? That’s my immediate association, although the name itself sound is very pretty.

DD’s dad wanted Morgana because of the Arthurian connection but I wasn’t keen.

I do love Igraine though which was King Arthur's mother’s name I believe and I’ve only ever heard of one little girl named igraine

Supposedly, Lilith was Adam's first wife, before Eve (although of course that's not in the Bible).
Mary Raven is lovely. I love ravens, and Raven sounds a bit goth but great as a middle name. DD had a boyfriend called Raven! It's a cool name. I'm not keen on Ursula. Love Morgana.

I love Lilith.

Manon? Etta? Ingrid? Astrid?

Don't like Raven, or Ebony.
Victoria risks the Vicky nn, which I'm not keen on.

I think your suggestions are very good actually.

Astrid is a fab name.

Manon, Etta and Ingrid are also good, solid, international names without the "baddie" connotations someone else picked up on.

I love Ursula. Silly in my opinion just to associate it with The Little Mermaid, but anyway, I don't think Ursula the sea witch is actually the worst role model for a women...she's no pushover lol.

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/05/2022 00:53

Ursula - by far the best
Raven - too ‘hello I am a goth’
Ebony - hard no. NO.
Lilith - Ok, bit odd. Also makes me think of Lilets
Victoria - OK but different sort of name
Morganna - OK but a bit cosplay
Gretel - Ok-ish but twee

Vivienne
Igraine
Ramona
Lowena
Olwen
Arwen
Thora
Astra
Astrid

Love Raven and Victoria, also Greta rather than Gretel.

mathanxiety · 06/05/2022 02:22

Love Ursula, Lilith, and Gretel.

All the names have a cool, goth vibe though.

mathanxiety · 06/05/2022 02:48

@MrsMoastyToasty, the vast majority of traditional names are saints' names.

Autienotnaughtie · 06/05/2022 02:50

Love Ursula and Lilith

NonagonInfinityOpensTheDoor · 06/05/2022 02:52

That poor unfortunate soul…

Theoldwoman · 06/05/2022 04:12

None of those would make my top list!

I went to school with an Ursula, her identical twin was called Kiri. I have never met another Ursula.

I don't mind Victoria, but loathe Vicky or Vic.
Gretel is sort of okay, but too much of a nursery rhyme to give a child that name.

What about:

Bridie
Asha
Calista
Violet
Josceline
Damelza
Mahalia
Leilani
Nicolette
Carissa
Rhiannon
Danielle
Patrice
Catriona
Miranda
Nina
Erica
Sienna
Indi
Electra
Dyani
Xanthe
Amali
Amity
Melia
