Which would you rather name a daughter/be named yourself?

I'm not religious but given that many popular names are biblical and names of saints (Michael, Lucy etc) should that be a problem?

What kind of person do you picture with each name?

Maria and Christina are nice. (Prefer Maria personally.) NOT Mary. (IMO) Very frumpy and may be prone to mocking - ('hairy mary' etc...)

I love Mary and Christina

SoggyPaper · 01/05/2022 13:52

I think Mary is probably due a comeback.

I don’t like names ending in ‘ia’ much, personally.

FayCarew · 01/05/2022 14:38

Mary, but all three are nice

Christina is probably the one I like best but she'd be Chris or Tina

Robinni · 01/05/2022 14:58

Mary - obviously very Catholic/Christian

Maria - same but there’s the Spanish vibe

Christina - probably the least religious connotation. Can be shortened to Chris/Chrissy/Chrissie/Tina/Ina(Eye-nah)

Alternatives: Marina, Marissa, Catherine/Kathryn/Kate/Cate/Katie/Katrina

Mary deserves a comeback.

I really like Mary. It’s a very cool name these days but with tradition behind it. Not frilly, which is good. I don’t think it’s particularly religious either, such is the weight of history with it. I also like Christina - but I like Mary more. Maria I’m not so keen on, but it’s fine. I think it’s more religious/Catholic than Mary, with Latino vibes.

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/05/2022 23:19

Mary is due a comeback - I’d go for that.

Not a Maria fan, and while Christina is lovely Chris and Tina are dreadful.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 01/05/2022 23:28

All are nice in different ways. Maria probably the most international as well as timeless feeling (think it's only occasionally just left the E and W top 100) but does have strong Catholic vibes I think. Mia is a cute nn.

Mary has more of a vintage/retro vibe now so I can see it making a big comeback and it has some amazing historical namesakes - but I go back and forth on whether I love the sound of it (May is a lovely nn though.). It was so overused in the past in the UK that weirdly I find the religious association less strong than for Maria.

Christina would possibly be my current choice of the three and I don't think the religious meaning matters personally. I like the fact that it gives her a lot of options if she's not keen on the full version - Chris/Chrissie/Christy/Tina might perhaps feel more dated but Kit/Kitty is retro cool now.

I also think Mary will make a come back. Have always liked the Scottish version, Mairi.

Penguinsaregreat · 01/05/2022 23:40

I think Christina has a very different vibe than the other 2. I like Christina best. Mary is very traditional and has strong religious connotations for me. I agree with others that Maria has religious connotations but in a more European way.

ButterRose · 08/05/2022 10:21

Christina would be my pick I feel someone can own that name and still be themselves and multiple nn options but Mary and Maria have very strong images attached to them none of them good . . . Could just be me though
