Hi, I would like to call my daughtr Venus (shortcut:Vee). Venus was the Roman goddess of love and beauty 😀Do you think it's good idea? I like also traditional Victoria 😀

Venus?

My first thought was razors… Victoria is much better. Or Diana for another Roman goddess.

ThatshallotBaby · 22/04/2022 21:36

I really like it.

The pudenda is called the mound of Venus. Just sharing that

MissBattleaxe · 22/04/2022 21:46

It totally rhymes with penis! It's not ridiculous to think so at all! There's a very slight difference but not enough for kids not put Venus and penis in a catcall or Limerick.

I knew a Verity called Vee. It worked. Also a pp mentioned the name Athena, which I think is beautiful.

Palmfrond · 22/04/2022 21:52

Great name but unforch;
a) rhymes with penis
b) stripper/drag name
c) classically strong association with sex
d) etymological origin of the word venereal

Ultimately the question when considering a name for a child is to think 'would I want to be called this?'

I can imagine happily introducing myself as Victoria/Vicky/Verity ..... But I'd hate to have a name like Venus. Although I don't love my name, I'm grateful to have a name that I've never once felt uncomfortable or embarrassed by. Having said that it hasn't done Venus Williams any harm!

Thehundredthnamechange · 23/04/2022 04:37

I see where you're going with this but as a teacher I wouldn't give a child a name that can rhyme with 'penis', have you never met any teenagers?

Longdistance · 23/04/2022 05:53

Venus/Penis
Venus leg razors
if you like Vee, then call her that. I went to school with one and I’m 46.

I thought of the Banarama song!

It doesn't rhyme with Penis.

It does in my accent!

We had a maths teacher called Miss Venus. It definitely rhymes with penis, poor woman. And there’s a “delightful” rugby/drinking song which rhymes Venus and penis fine. (On the good ship Venus).

savedbyanalien · 23/04/2022 06:01

Awful name, sorry.

boronia · 23/04/2022 06:01

I mean Bananarama Angry

OutlookStalking · 23/04/2022 06:19

I am south uk and cant actually see how venus would not rhyme with penis. I can't work out any other pronounciation!

But that wouldn't be my main reason. The venus/sex link would be too much for me . That and razors.

carefullycourageous · 23/04/2022 06:29

The problem with Venus, as with Adonis, or Atlas, is if you child isn't Venus-like it'll be a horrible burden. Venus is a name that would not 'fit' with child who is very shy, or wants no attention, or isn't a beauty.

I think for that reason it is a really bad choice, it's too much.

Victoria is therefore much better.

Children should have names they can own, not names that own them.

GalactatingGoddess · 23/04/2022 06:30

Venus is gorgeous

TheDaydreamBelievers · 23/04/2022 08:31

Vivien/Vivian/Vivienne? Or Violet? Vera
