I think they work well together, similar feel, different sounds, no crossing over nicknames...

I much prefer Marianela to Mariella.

ramidad123 · 13/04/2022 18:12

never thought of Marianela, thanks!

I would probably think them a bit mismatch at first as Emily is very classic and safe whereas Mariella is more unexpected but once I started hearing them together a few times it would be fine.

I really like Mariella it has a classic sound but is lovely and a bit different

I know two sibsets that are Matilda and Emily.

Ellmau · 13/04/2022 21:56

I'd feel a bit short changed if I were Emily, it's very plain in comparison.

I was going to say exactly this.

Mariella and Emilia would be better.

Jesus that is frilly

I think Marianne works better with Emily than either.

Matilda, Clara, Jessica, Louisa, Susannah, Charlotte, Lucy/ Lucinda, Beatrice nn Bea, Claudia, Georgia / Georgina, Francesca / Frances, Adelaide, Dora, Isabel, Philippa nn Pippa, Grace, Iris, Alice, Nancy, Harriet, Lydia, Annabel, Sophie, Sylvie, Rose, Flora, Florence, Juliet / Julia, Katherine / Caitlin nn Kate/Cait, Hannah, Selena are all quite natural partners

I don’t like the name Mariella.
I would prefer a name like Matilda, Felicity, Phoebe or Annie with Emily.

mathanxiety · 14/04/2022 23:49

Mariella sounds a little like some brand. Not sure what product.

I prefer Mariel.

Padderbadger · 15/04/2022 01:51

@Ellmau I agree!

Emily and ...
Mary Ellen
Maisie
Margot
Maud

Love Mariella and don't think Emily and Mariella are mismatched. After all, they are both soft girly names.

I would also say kids don't go around and think "my sister got better name, Braahhhaga" They are mostly self conscious about names their siblings got, but that's not big deal to worry about. I saw no people wanting to change names because of sibling envi.

Funkyslippers · 01/05/2022 08:14

My friend's DDs are Emily and Maisie! I think they go well together

aleebaleebee · 02/05/2022 00:19

Like PP, the first name that came to mind was Marianne. I think Emily and Marianne works well.

Sticking with the M theme, I had a lovely midwife called Miriam who was in her 20s and her name really grew on me. Emily and Miriam also works.

aleebaleebee · 02/05/2022 00:23

Also agree with PP that most siblings prob don't compare their names. Knew three sisters - two had common 70s names (Nicola, Emma type names) and the third was called the much more unusual Marissa. Can't remember it ever being commented on.

Snowiscold · 02/05/2022 07:39

I think Mariella is too frilly next to Emily. I agree that Marianne or Marian or even Mary go much better.

queenofmay · 02/05/2022 14:43

Emily sounds a lot more English/British compared with the Italian Mariella. I mean, Emily is very common/popular in this country (assuming you live in the UK) and Mariella is the opposite. I don't think they would sound awful together or anything, but to me they're different in terms of style. Whether that actually matters or not is up to you to decide. Lots of people have names that are stylistically very different from those of their siblings and it's rarely a point of contention. Think of the Kardashian siblings. Kourtney, Kimberly, Khloe... And Robert.

Yika · 02/05/2022 14:46

I think they go quite well together - as a PP said, they are both pretty, feminine names.

blameitonthecaffeine · 02/05/2022 15:40

Ellmau I might be wrong but I get the impression from the OP that Emily already exists and it is Mariella that is the name under consideration.

I agree that Mariella is a lot more unusual but I don't think that matters. They're both pretty names and go well together.

Snowiscold · 02/05/2022 16:07

I’m somewhat surprised people think the names go well together. Emily is a plain, no-nonsense name to me, not particularly pretty or girly. Mariella is the opposite.

unvillage · 02/05/2022 19:44

Mariella is pretty frilly. How about Marianne?
