Thoughts on my baby names list?

Hi all, first baby - not planning to find out what it is.

Boys:

Bryan
Michael
Rowan

Girls:

Caitlin
Olivia
Violet
Evelyn

Second names are long - both grand parents names hyphenated for girl separate for boy. For girls very similar to Anna-Marie and boys very similar to David Peter! I don’t intend to use middle names bar at christening - they’re a bit of a mouthful but more there as a tribute to grandparents rather than to make the name sound nice and cute!

We can’t decide on which girls name. Our style of girls names we like is probably classic English names - feel like maybe there is the perfect name we are missing if anyone has any suggestions!

Names Isabelle, Annabelle, Louisa/Louise, Eloise, Charlotte, Christina, Sophia/Sophie, Grace, Lilliana/Lily, Rose all out as siblings have used them (big family)

Also surname ends in -ee sound so names like Emily / Amelie don’t work as too rhyme-y

Why is it so hard!!!!

I like Caitlin best out of your girls list, there don't seem to be many babies called it these days so it would be really refreshing to meet a little Caitlin!

KirstenBlest · 13/04/2022 11:21

I prefer the Brian spelling, and like it.
Love Michael.
Rowan in ok

Caitlin - ok
Olivia - overused to the point of making it boring
Violet - ok
Evelyn - dislike and too popular

Not keen on any, sorry

Our style of girls names we like is probably classic English names.

Caitlin is an Irish name, though the usual pronunciation now is not the original Irish one (which is more like Kathleen).
What about Katherine, with Kate as a short form?

emmathedilemma · 13/04/2022 11:53

From your list I'd go with Michael because Bryan is just too dated (and not in a trendy way) and every other baby seems to be called Rowan / Rohan at the moment!
Your girls listed are all ok, Caitlin feels a bit dated to me and Violet seems to be very of the moment. Olivia is apparently popular but I've never come across one under the age of 20 so it might depend where you live!

I really like all your girls' names. I'd probably go for Caitlin as the others are very popular. I also wouldn't hyphenate the middle name, just have two separate ones.

From your boy's list I would go for Michael. Rowan is OK. Don't like Bryan.

IAmSantaOhYesIAm · 13/04/2022 12:20

I like Bryan or Caitlin from your lis

Other suggestions

Not another Olivia and Evelyn please!

Out of boys I prefer Michael.

bloominglovelyorange · 13/04/2022 14:10

How about Caroline as a girls name?

bloominglovelyorange · 13/04/2022 14:21

For your boys list:

Bryan - nice. Definitely due a resurgence. Currently outside the top 500 names. I think it would be a good solid choice in 2022, yet an interesting choice at the same time.

Michael - great choice and so underused these days. It's fallen from being number 22 in the charts 20 years ago, and now is about to leave the top 100 names! 📉 . It's very refreshing to meet a baby Michael these days.

Rowan - this is my baby girls name. I will warn you that it's booming in popularity 📈 and is on a huge upswing. I wouldn't have chosen if I'd realised. It also gets shortened to Row all the time even when I ask people not to- you might like that though? The main negative is that it's so similar sounding to the name Roman with an M which is THE fastest rising boy name. Roman with an M has risen hundreds of places to now be in the top 30 and everywhere we go, if it's nursery or swimming, there's usually at least 2 baby Romans there and then my Rowan too so there's usually comments and people getting muddled and confused and asking "who has an M and who has a W in middle of their name?". Wouldn't have been an issue until a couple of years ago but now Roman exploded and it gets me down. They're very different names in many ways but when you have a few in a small group it does get confusing. Here's graph of official statistics:

Thanks all, some good points made on Rowan and other similar sounding names.

I like Katherine - don’t know why we didn’t think of it!! Will also add Vivienne and Caroline to the list to discuss with DH.

Interesting everyone saying about Olivia being so popular. Both DH and I don’t know any - young or old in our extended friend group/ work colleagues/ their kids/ towns we grew up in. I looked on the rankings there and it is super popular but we literally know none and thought it was an unusual choice 😂

Re Bryan - mixed responses on it here but it is still my cautious number one as it’s my grandad name so it’s definitely not modern/trendy ha but I think it’s a strong name all the same. Michael is also a family name.
