What are your thoughts on Maeve?

Which spelling do you prefer?

The mythological character is Medb. But for some reason I think Meadhbh looks really really nice. Is it too complicated?

What about Maeve? Would it be better because it's the most popular spelling?

Do you like the sound? I used to like it (and I still do, just not as much) but since watching the show "Derry Girls" I am wondering if it might sound a bit odd? There was a characters called Maeve and it was used a lot during a dinner conversation and then the Ukranian exchange student stated "Why are they making this sound" or something along those lines, referring to Maeve. It was a funny scene, I can't explain it well but maybe Maeve might sound weird to everyone outside of Ireland and the UK? I am used to it so I like it.

I also like May. I know it is completely unrelated but I still couldn't use both so do you prefer Meadhbh (Maeve) or May?

Where do you live? If not Ireland then any version other than Maeve will be spelt / pronounced wrongly.

Will you find that irritating? (Both myself and my children have names that have more than one spelling but all three of us use the most common spelling. I find it intensely irritating when people spell it wrong!)

Ps I like Maeve better than May.

Unless the baby is born in May. Then I like it because it is factual. (I like factual things!)

I'm in Ireland and I'd go with Méabh. If I didn't live here I'd use Maeve as everybody knows Maeve. I do like the name. I think it is a good solid traditional well used name.

Where do you live? I'm a teacher 'up north' I would really struggle with any other version than Maeve!

Meadhbh was the spelling we picked. I'm glad dc was a boy because I've changed my mind and prefer Méabh now.

It doesn't matter if it sounds weird to people who've never heard it before. Everyone can get used to names.

Our one is called Maedbh

topcat2014 · 11/03/2022 18:59

I would be pronouncing most of those as Mebb.

Sorry

A joke surely? That’s just a random collection of letters.

Just go with Maeve OP. Yes it’s an anglicisation but it’s been around for so long it’s fine.
