...and grown to like!
It's happened with me a few times. where I have never really thought much of a particular name, then having read the name so many times in a book it has grown on me, and I really like it.

I've just finished reading a book with a character called Ottilie, and it's really grown on me.

Yup, if I have a girl I will call her Clara. I first heard that name in a book. There is a Pearl in the book I am currently reading and love that name, but my DH has veto'd it. I also love pearls so it would have been perfect but what can ya do!

Then there are the ones I wouldn't use like Katniss, but that is actually a pretty sounding name.

What book does Ottilie appear in, out of curiosity?
I've liked Alma a lot more since reading The History of Love.

Mumofgirls2017 · 08/03/2022 16:58

Sephy (Persephone) in noughts and crosses
Luna in HP
Alice (Wonderland)
Atticus, Scout (TKAM)
Clover (what Katy did)

I remember reading Clean Break by Jacqueline Wilson when I was younger and there was a character in it called Vita. I've loved it ever since.

Names that have stuck with me from books:
Loveday - from Rosamund Pilcher
Posy and Petrova - Noel Streatfield, Ballet Shoes
Lala - Noel Streatfield again, White Boots
Lyra - Philip Pullman, His Dark Materials
Scout - Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
Carrie - Laura Ingles Wilder, Little House on the Prairie
And, of course,
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy (Lynley Dodd).

CaffiSaliMali · 09/03/2022 08:42

Aveline from The Innocent by Posie Graham Evans.
Luna from Harry Potter.
Lyra from His Dark Materials and The Book of Dust.
Arya and Sansa from Game of Thrones.

Scout - tkamb

I'm actually going to use this :)

Magenta82 · 09/03/2022 11:19

I called my daughter Esme after a character from Terry Pratchett's Discworld.

FayCarew · 09/03/2022 14:47

Emma Jane Austen

I know a Kizzy - her mother loved The Diddakoi

Rumer is nice. I'd use Scout for a dog but not for a girl

It's the name of a little girl in the book "No Child of Mine" by Susan Lewis.

I've only ever come across Amyas in a book, and am not terribkymsure how to pronounce it!

Also Malise

ChessieFL · 09/03/2022 16:27

The best book name ever is Mealy Potatoes, from David Copperfield. Not one I would ever consider using in real life though!

hullaballoo19 · 09/03/2022 16:52

Loved Lyra since reading his dark materials and just named dd2 Lyra 😊 also sephy from noughts and crosses and taryn from cruel prince

StarlessSea123 · 09/03/2022 17:48

Pip - Great Expectations
Pandora - Adrian Mole
Hermione - Harry Potter
Lyra - Northern Lights
Elsie, Clover - What Katy Did
Atticus - To Kill a Mockingbird

DogsAndGin · 15/03/2022 22:02

Eleni

polkadotty2 · 15/03/2022 22:05

Another vote for Lyra and Arya

mumofEandE · 15/03/2022 22:20

@Magenta82

I called my daughter Esme after a character from Terry Pratchett's Discworld.
I called my DD Esme too but from a book I had read years ago!
toastofthetown · 15/03/2022 22:26

I grew to love the name Miranda reading The Collector by John Fowles. I was ambivalent on the name when I started it but really warmed to it.

Hushabyelullaby · 15/03/2022 22:27

Aren't Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's girls called Scout and Rumer?

CakesOfVersailles · 15/03/2022 23:54

Scout is a nickname in To Killing A Mockingbird. The character is called Jean.

The names Mary and Jane really grew on me when reading a lot of historical and classic fiction. Previously I had dismissed them as boring.
