Philip and Matthew

We have a David and would have had a James if DD had been DS2.

Our list was;

David Alexander (DC1)

and for DC2 the shortlist was:

James William
Samuel James
Hector James
Patrick James

James and David are my favourite boys' names and I wanted our son to have one of those names, but they weren't favourites with my husband. He wanted Thomas, which I wasn't keen on, so we compromised on another classic name (impossible now to imagine our son with any other name, of course).

I also like Nicholas and Alexander.

Time40 · 25/02/2022 21:35

What do you think of Philip?

I love it, and I think it's due for a comeback

My favourite ‘boring’ classic name are Daniel, Matthew and Benjamin.

Eldest is David - totally perfectly good name!

CharlieBoo · 25/02/2022 22:04

I would say the most classic of those is James.. it’s timeless, a lot like William, it never goes in or out of fashion. Richard feels really dated, as does David.

James is my ex dh’s name, my brothers name and my sons middle name. I would’ve used it as a first name, but thought there would be just one too many in a small family. I love it x

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/02/2022 22:56

As pp notes James is kind of the ultimate classic in a way (along with Thomas and William) as it's always stayed very popular -it's hard to guess the age of a James.

But Phillip will stand out more now (in a nice way) as it's a lot rarer on younger men, without being as retro as names like Stanley, Albert etc. Diminutive "Pip" is also completely adorable on a little one, and "Flip" cool on a teenager imo (so he doesn't have to go the middle aged "Phil" route if he doesn't want to).

ThunderSnowDrop · 26/02/2022 10:47

I think James might be due a drop in popularity like David did in the last 20 years. Because it's become ubiquitous.
