Stergios or Stelios? For a baby boy

Opinions please!

Pronunciation is:

Stergios: "Ster" like stereo and then "gio" like Giovanni, the Italian name.

Stelios: "Stel" like Stella and then "ios" like the ending of Giorgio, the Italian name.

I have nothing to do with Italians but I didn't know how to explain it better Grin

Of the two, Stelios is a bit nicer and easier to say for the UK

ODFOx · 14/02/2022 08:57

I think they are both Greek names, rather than Italian.
Unusual choices if you aren't Greek, but both are a pleasant musical sound.

ODFOx · 14/02/2022 09:01

And they both end with a short o sound rather that a long one, so 'oss' rather that 'ohs'.

Vampirethriller · 14/02/2022 09:02

Stelios is nice, I know a lovely Stelios.

Fl0w3ry · 14/02/2022 09:03

Stelios because I’m finding that one easier to say.

Fleur405 · 14/02/2022 09:08

I prefer Stelios but I thought you pronounced the s on the end (rather than pronouncing it like Giorgio)?

ChillysWaterBottle · 14/02/2022 09:09

I don't know if I'm misunderstanding your post but they're Greek names, not Italian.

Stelios is lovely!

thingymaboob · 14/02/2022 09:12

Greek, not Italian . Unless you have a link to Greece, I think it's quite pretentious and will cause unnecessary annoyance to your DC as they'll always have to explain the spelling / pronunciation

ChillysWaterBottle · 14/02/2022 09:14

Oh I've just seen your other post saying you have Greek heritage - makes sense! I like them both but still prefer Stelios x

lavender2022 · 14/02/2022 09:18

Are you Greek? Or is your unborn DC part Greek?

Abrakatabra · 14/02/2022 09:22

We are Greek! Thank you all!

It looks like Stelios is much preferred to Stergios.

Now next question please... Stelios or Asterios? Asterios will be the full name at the BC anyway and we are considering various nn, one of which is Stelios.

Stelios just makes me think Ryanair. I don't like it for that reason so would definitely go with Stergios (or Sergios which I think is better known in the Uk).

itssquidstella · 14/02/2022 09:30

Asterios is lovely!

alisoninwonderland · 14/02/2022 09:31

I think Stelios is nicest Smile

ofwarren · 14/02/2022 09:34

Stelios or Asterios
Both nice

BlondeWidow · 14/02/2022 10:11

Stelios just makes me think of EasyJet!

I think you mean EasyJet! 🤣

We are Greek too and my grandfather was called Stelios - my vote is for Stelios or Asterios Smile

Abrakatabra · 14/02/2022 10:50

Thanks All!

I may need a new thread to discuss the Stelios vs Asterios as you like them both...

We are thinking of Stelios as a nn to Asterios and not as a standalone name.

Asterios would be anyway the birth certificate name.

Asterios

I like that a lot better.
