Can I use Ciara?

I really like the Irish name Ciara - prefer the original spelling to Kiera / Keira. I have a couple of concerns -

  1. Pronunciation - I think it's Keer-ah, but I've seen some people say it's more like Key-ra?
  1. I have no Irish heritage and live in England, is that an issue?
  1. Is it a bit too dated? It used to be pretty popular but seems to be declining now.

Any other thoughts welcome. Thanks.

Yes - It’s a great name.
I have 3 cousins called Ciara!!!

They live in London and Australia no one struggles to pronounce it. “Keer-ah” is also fairly internationally pronouncable.

@shoofly

Lovely name, your child may get fed up with people mis spelling it, but it's not the worst thing. I have an Aidan who is cross with people who spell it Aiden but he's 10, I'm sure he'll get over it at some stage Smile
I'm sorry to have to tell you but I know a 43 year old Aidan who still gets fed up with the Aiden spelling (especially now it's overtaken the -an spelling in the UK stats). Beautiful name though!

I know a Caera which is the Scottish spelling and it’s pronounced Keerah. To get round the spelling she explains it’s camera without the “m”!

Ciara, spelt this way, is an Irish name. Kiera and Keira are anglicised versions of the Irish name. They are all pronounced exactly the same.

Chiara is a completely different Italian name (Italian for Clara I think?) pronounced Key-ara.

Ciara pronounced “Sierra” is an idiotic American thing.

If you want “keera” with no Irish heritage and living in England I’d spell it Keira as highest chance of correct spelling and pronunciation.

I’m Irish and would always choose Ciara as I think it looks much nicer, but clearly would cause problems as the variety of responses on this thread shows.

Beautiful name,

How is Kiara pronounced?

RuthW · 07/02/2022 17:23

I would pronounce that Key-arh-ra.
