Clemency

Thought on Clemency?

I posted asking about Joy and Mercy and this was suggested. (I am making a new thread because usually when I decide to ask about a new name mid-thread my comment is missed and posters only comment on the name in the OP, and I'm suddenly obsessed with hearing people's opinions about Clemency, as I feel sure I either adore it or despise it but I can't work out which Grin).

I love Clem and Clemmie but as NN for Clementine!
I once knew a Clem (a boy) but he would be 50 now !

Snowiscold · 25/01/2022 19:48

I like Clemency. But I dislike Clemmie/Clemmie. If there were to be any hint that those would end up as nicknames, it would put me off.

BiscuitLover3678 · 25/01/2022 19:51

I love it for a boy!

LaChanticleer · 25/01/2022 19:58

I think it's really lovely. It's got a lovely sound, and is quite meaningful (I also like Verity).

There are possibilities for the 'long name' and 'short name": Clemmie as a child, and Clemency as an adult.

I'm not religious at all, and these are not family names in my family (we all have very classic English names which have been used in the family for about 3 centuries now), but I think Clemency is just lovely. It makes me smile.

Lagarthatheviking · 25/01/2022 20:04

I knew a Clemence once, she was lovely , think it’s a french version

BelleEnderman · 25/01/2022 20:07

I prefer clemency to joy or mercy!

But my favourite virtue names are

Honor
Constance
Hope

@wanttomarryamillionaire

It sounds very pretentious and try hard.
Yes, like those pretentious puritans! 😂😂

@HacerSonarSusPasos

Quite awful I'm afraid. Screams Amish or Mormon, neither of which is an association I would welcome.
I'm loving the Amish and Mormon vibes! Just what I'm after! Grin

I like Clemency, and Joy as well. I'm not keen on Mercy as the only association I have with it on a person is quite a sad one, but I suppose without that reference it's quite usable, objectively. I also like Constance a lot.

I find the Mormon association funny, as Mormons tend to be quite trendy namers these days, especially American ones! More Luna and Faye and Zinnia than virtue names. Maybe the Amish link holds up, not sure. 😁

I love Clemency and also Clementine.

There’s a really nice Clem(ency) in a series of books for children. ‘Binny for Short’ series by Hilary McKay.

hanahsaunt · 26/01/2022 12:37

I love it. I know an Honor and think that rather lovely too.

thewhatsit · 26/01/2022 13:16

I’ve written on your other thread (mentioning Kate Silverton!) but I do like it.
I also think it sounds very right with Tabitha in the way that Joy and Mercy don’t.

RedRobyn2021 · 26/01/2022 13:34

Op I love it such a nice name and she could be Clem or Clemmy for short love love love ❤️

JustMaggie · 26/01/2022 13:42

I like Clemency, but I also really like Mercy and Joy.

housemaus · 26/01/2022 14:14

I actually quite like it! Of the virtue names, Constance is my favourite though.

PattyPan · 26/01/2022 14:31

I love Constance too. I also really like Prudence.

CorsicaDreaming · 26/01/2022 19:13

Fairly tricky to spell for a child

Likely to get shortened to Clem

Going to need spelling out for every time they need to fill in a form over phone or similar

Sounds more a male than female name to me (?)

Firebird83 · 26/01/2022 20:03

I like it. Virtue names are great. I know someone who named her daughter Patience.
