Hi all, what does everything think of the name Rueben for a boy? Pronounce fed Roo-ben. Can also be spelt Ruben which I think I prefer.

Don't know why but it has really stuck with me...

Thank you x

I'm sure David Platt from Corrie called his son Reuben. It's a good name.

TheGratefulBread · 23/01/2022 19:53

It's Reuben, from the Hebrew name Reuven. Rueben is a misspelling. If you're going to use it, spell it correctly. (Ruben is an acceptable alternative as it's used in other cultures, such as Hispanic cultures).

I know a fair number of Reubens, but I'm Jewish, so I would!

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 23/01/2022 19:56
@halfsiesonapotnoodle it can be spelt either way.
It cannot. Rueben is completely wrong.

Juancornetto · 23/01/2022 20:02

It's a lovely name, has such a nice sound to it!

TenThousandSpoons · 23/01/2022 20:05

Reuben is a lovely name.

EishetChayil · 23/01/2022 20:05

Reuben yes.

Rueben no.

Lemonweightloss · 23/01/2022 20:09

@ExpectingLady93, yes, it's definitely on the rise.

DanceToTheMusicInMyHead · 23/01/2022 20:11

I have a Reuben. DH is Dutch and we debated the Dutch spelling (Ruben) and we thought no, we're in the UK, everyone will spell it Reuben, it's a traditional name. Ha! Barely a single person spells it that way. So whatever spelling you choose (and personally, I think Rueben is a mis-spelling), no one will spell it how you want anyway Grin

LondonQueen · 23/01/2022 20:13

I prefer Ruben, not sure why you need the extra E?

cheekychaplin · 23/01/2022 20:15
@halfsiesonapotnoodle it can be spelt either way.
Nah. If you type Rueben into Google it will ask 'did you mean Reuben?'

mnahmnah · 23/01/2022 20:16

@LondonQueen

Because that’s how it’s been spelt for thousands of years

Hugasauras · 23/01/2022 20:19

Rueben looks like a typo. My phone even autocorrected it to Reuben Grin

MargosKaftan · 23/01/2022 20:20

I know a few Reuben's. Combinations of being known as Reuben, Ben and Roo. (The Bens are adults).

As its an Old Testament name, spell it right. (Am I remembering right that he was one of the brothers of Joseph with the dream coat - was he the brother that didn't want to kill Joseph or have remembered that wrong?!)

NannyR · 23/01/2022 20:25

Reuben is a great name, Rueben not so much, it would make me think that the parents didn't know the origin of it and had misspelled it by accident (a bit like when people spell Phoebe as Pheobe).
My own name has two different spellings and mine is the less commonly used one, so it can be a pain when people constantly misspell it, but at least they are both legitimate, correct spellings.

TheChemicalMother · 23/01/2022 20:29

Reuben is a great name.

But any other spelling is naff.

Lolalovesroses · 23/01/2022 20:30

I love the name, there are 4 in my sons class though, and two in his football team, it's very popular around here.

Skeumorph · 23/01/2022 20:31

Rueben is wrong.

Reuben is nice.

Crimesean · 23/01/2022 20:33

Reuben is a lovely name, but please don't try for a "yoonique" spelling. It'll look like you just can't spell.

I know a child whose parents named him Issac instead of Isaac, the poor child is always being asked how to pronounce it and why did his parents mis-spell his name, it's embarrassing and unnecessary.

mguedes92 · 23/01/2022 20:39

I have a Ruben, we went with the Portuguese way of spelling it as I'm originally from Portugal 😊

degsydoodoos · 23/01/2022 20:41

I love it. Just to throw a little curve ball at you, my friend's (now adult) son was christened Reuben, but has been known as Ben all his life. It's an unusual abbreviation for it I think - most Bens are Benedict / Benjamin etc, and I'd heard only previously heard Reuben abbreviated to Rube.

ExpectingLady93 · 23/01/2022 20:41

Thanks all Smile

Reuben or Ruben would be better. Rueben is a misspelling.

I taught a little boy who spelled it Rubeun though Hmm

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 23/01/2022 20:44

I'm not a fan, it's quite popular where I am. Only ever seen it spelled Reuben.

driftcompatible · 23/01/2022 20:53

Rueben looks like an embarrassing spelling mistake and you'll be forever telling people it's intentional (they either won't believe you or think you're thick).

Reuben is incredibly popular in my area - if popularity bothers you ask around about how many Reubens your friends' children know.

Fivebeanchilli · 23/01/2022 23:27

Reuben is lovely.
Ruben is a European spelling I think, although lots of people misspell Reuben as this.
Rueben is just a mistake.
