Brother for Oisín..

Hi there!
Looking for opinions on a boys name we already have an Oisín. Shortlist is as follows:

Fionn
Oscar
Taghg

We are Irish, living in Ireland would like to keep to an Irish name I think as DH and I both have Irish names so think it might be nice to keep that trend in our family?

We both really love Oscar, I know for many it doesn't appear to be an Irish name (but does have a great Irish history and meaning behind it).. but I do love the other two names too so we are finding it hard to narrow it down further!

With regards to popularity that really doesn't bother me too much, however Oscar would be the least popular of these three in Ireland.

Any opinions on the above? Thankfully we just have one girls name we both love so that side is sorted but struggling for a boy!

Thanks Smile

All nice names. Oscar is lovely, but I know of several baby boys named that recently (South Dublin suburb).

switswoo81 · 23/01/2022 07:44

Oscar is lovely but Tadgh is my favorite with Oisin.

Fleur06 · 23/01/2022 07:45

I should say any other name suggestions welcome too! Incase there is a gem we haven't thought about.Smile

Both names starting with the initial O will be tricky for opening post in future!

Wailywailywaily · 23/01/2022 07:49

Oisín and Oscar may be a bit of an mouthful?
I’ve always loved Fiachra

Ceramide · 23/01/2022 07:58

I like Tadgh best.

Aodhán
Conan
Eóghan
Dillon
Niall
Daniel

Ihaveaskedyouthrice · 23/01/2022 07:59

I think Fionn is lovely with Oisín. I wouldn't pick Tadhg as it's always mis-spelled.

One of the boys in my DDs class is Setanta and I love it. Also love Odhrán.

sillysmiles · 23/01/2022 08:02

Íarla?
Cathal
Domhnall

From your list i love Fionn but also think Finn is lovely.

thepiratequeen · 23/01/2022 08:03

I like all the names but Fionn would be my favourite.

Tadhg is my favourite out of your list. I can’t use it as my surname begins with an Er sound.

I adore Cormac, still working on DH to be allowed to use it (it’s a family name for him).

Buddhabowl · 23/01/2022 08:41

I love Tadhg the most and if we lived in Ireland (Irish DH) it would be my top choice for this baby. I like Fionn too. I'm not keen on Oscar at all. I'm English though and it's so popular over here, I don't really think of it as an Irish name, plus it doesn't go as well with Oisin.

Liv999 · 23/01/2022 09:44

I would go with Fionn as it goes really well with Oisín, really dont like Tadhg or Oscar, I love Aodh and Éanna for boys

Tullig · 23/01/2022 10:39

Go with Oscar if that’s what you love — DS has it as a middle name. I think Fionn is overused these days (and my persnickety side gets annoyed by all the dark-haired ones!)

Tadhg is my favourite of your three, but if I were having another son he’d be Íarla or Naoise.

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/01/2022 11:19

Oscar if you don’t mind the double O
Otherwise Fionn
Tadhg I think is harsh sounding.

SeanChailleach · 23/01/2022 13:41

Oscar and they can be the Ozzies. Grin
I think Naoise is nice with Oisín but not sure if that is getting to be a girls' name?
Fionn and Oisín is very mythological cycle, it goes well.

TurquoiseBaubles · 23/01/2022 13:51

I wish I'd been brave enough to use Setanta. I admire the O'hAilpin brothers' mother - SeanOg, Setanta, Teu, and Aisake (I think there may be two other brothers as well).

My favourite boys names now are Conal, Rohan and Rian (with or without an extra i). Insert fadas as appropriate!

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 23/01/2022 16:30

Is Oscar the son of Oisín though? And Fionn his father? Is that weird? I'm probably over thinking it...

Anyway, I like both Oscar and Tadhg a lot. I think Oscar and Oisín might be a bit similar for me personally.

KirstenBlest · 23/01/2022 17:22

Tadhg. Not keen on Oscar andit's a bit matchy-matchy. Not sure how to say Fionn but I'm not Irish, I'd guess it to be Fin/Fen

mamaduckbone · 23/01/2022 17:26

Fionn for definite - lovely name.

Tullig · 23/01/2022 17:31

You're right, but I quite like a bit of overthinking about the Fenian Cycle. Grin

OP, please have a daughter next and call her Plor na mBan. Plor for short. Grin

Garman · 23/01/2022 17:31

Pick one you can spell, so not Tadhg.

Pegasussnail · 23/01/2022 23:16

Senan
Cormac
Finn

Fivebeanchilli · 23/01/2022 23:23

I really like Tadgh.
I think, because it's not possible to guess the pronunciation as an English speaker, it runs less risk of being mispronounced because people are likely to look it up (that's what I did when I met one a few years ago).
I like the other names too but Tadgh would be my favourite.
