Can I call my baby Luca?

Luca Hughes? Full name Luca Adam Hughes.

We don’t live in the UK, but are likely to return to live in England. I have this worry of Luca Hughes sounding like look at yous. Possibly an irrational worry.

Grateful for any opinions.

I think this would be fine! Luca is a lovely name, and Luca Hughes wouldn't be weird to me.

WorraLiberty · 16/01/2022 11:14

OMG I was just going to say, "Of course, Luca is a lovely name".

But you're right, with that surname it definitely sounds like 'Look at yous' I'm afraid.

WhiteCatmas · 16/01/2022 11:15

Especially if you live in the second floor.

Keeping2ChevronsApart · 16/01/2022 11:15

I think it sounds fine it'll be pronounced Looka rather than Lucca? There must be a Hugh Jarse out there somewhere, poor chap!

chasingmyrainbow · 16/01/2022 11:19

This was my boy name for my 3mo girl! Love the name. Think it sounds fine to me ☺️

Synchrony · 16/01/2022 11:22

Doesn't sound anything like look at yours to me. I'd never have made that association.

I agree
BendingSpoons · 16/01/2022 11:24

Looks fine to me! I didn't make the connection until you said it.

PattyPan · 16/01/2022 11:48

I didn’t think of look at yous because yous isn’t used where I live but yes I do think it sounds weird with your surname sorry. Luke or Lucas would be slightly better.

CovidCorvid · 16/01/2022 11:49

Lucas?

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/01/2022 11:49

Love Luca, Italian friends have one. Wouldn’t pair it with some UK surnames but it sounds fine with yours.

Downsize2021 · 16/01/2022 11:51

In my Scottish accent I'd never even consider that! It's a lovely name.

Blubells · 16/01/2022 11:56

Now that you've mentioned it, yes it does sound a little like Look at Yous.

RedCandyApple · 16/01/2022 12:11

I hear look at yous as well, I wouldn’t personally but then I’m funny with names anyway

Ceramide · 16/01/2022 12:56

I think Luca Hughes does sound like 'Look at Yous' if spoken with a Liverpool accent. I can imagine John Bishop saying it that way.

Luredbyapomegranate · 16/01/2022 16:13

I think it sounds fine, but it might depend on accent. You could always go for Lucas - which will date a bit less. Or Linus.

VeloHostage · 16/01/2022 16:18

Well my first thought was Luca Zingaretti which (depending) is a very good thing ... Grin

pompomsgalore · 16/01/2022 18:33

He will mostly he called Luca. If you like it use it. I love Luca.

MaizeAmaze · 16/01/2022 18:39

It's a lovely name, but not great with your surname. Sorry.

cherrypie66 · 16/01/2022 19:50

It's lovely. Lucas is nice too

Datsandcogs · 16/01/2022 19:56

No, not with Hughes. Lucas is a little better but I think you need to choose something different.

TragoCardboardCopper · 16/01/2022 20:02

Wouldn't sound like look a(t) yous at all where I am (South West)

No one down here says 'yous' and we don't use a long ooooo sound in 'look'. Does your accent do that? If not, then I suppose it depends where you intend to live if you do return?

SamMil · 16/01/2022 20:10

I think it's a lovely name!

(caveat: I'm from the South East & never heard the phrase "look at yous")

Graceyland · 20/01/2022 13:49

I wouldn’t have made that connection myself, Luca is cute, go for it!

PAFMO · 20/01/2022 14:30

It doesn't go at all with the surname. Sorry. It's the two long "u" sounds too close together.
Lucas goes better.
