Cecilia?

Yay or nay?
Is it vintage? Cool? Old ladies' name? Is it becoming more popular? I think it's a lovely classic, not too bothered about meaning. I wonder if it might cause some spelling problems with Cecelia being an alternative.

Love it. Would consider it for DC. Love Cecily too.

Musmerian · 14/01/2022 21:27

I think it’s fab. I taught a lovely Cecilia who was called Cece by everyone. Also like the musical link. Cecily and Celia also cute but not as strong.

isthisit83 · 14/01/2022 21:32

LOVE IT. Was on my list but DH didn't like it and in the end we had a boy so didn't matter.

GoodnightGrandma · 14/01/2022 21:33

Lovely, but I like Celia more.

HallieHufflepuff · 15/01/2023 13:27

I love it!! 😀
DH and I see expecting our baby soon and want to call them Cecilia if it's a girl, Cece for short.
I made a similar post to this recently.

A lot liked it and some said 'prissy' like in this thread, but you can't please everyone.

scottishnames · 15/01/2023 17:33

It's lovely. Patron saint of music. I also really like Cecily.
And what's with all the shortenings? Nice if you/your child likes them but they are not compulsory. I have a three-syllable name and it's never been shortened.

porpy · 15/01/2023 17:37

im not keen. Cecelia is awkward to say, Cece sounds a bit posh and twee, Celia sounds like a gluten-free person.

HallieHufflepuff · 15/01/2023 20:44

@scottishnames People usually like to give nicknames for longer names

Rickandmortified100 · 15/01/2023 23:30

I love it! I see it as vintage and classy. It has a religious feel (after the saint, being popular with Catholics) which I like. It’s strong and dignified with a cute nn for when she’s a kid! Lovely.

Laquila · 15/01/2023 23:37

I think it's beautiful, would have been on my list for a girl. @scottishnames I suspect the vast majority of people just use nicknames because, as you say, they/their child likes them. Surely no-one thinks they're compulsory? That being said, I can't think of a child I know at the moment without a nickname. Even the ones called something short like Max are lengthened to Maxi!

Tinysoxxx · 16/01/2023 01:03

Just make sure you are ok with the song lyrics as Cecelia is a naughty lady!

Bagsundermyeyestoday · 16/01/2023 01:09

Old American lady. Like a Jewish one , the grandmother from The Nanny show

Kokeshi123 · 16/01/2023 02:52

It’s a nice name, but I would spell it Cecilia.

Cecile, Cicily and Cecile are nice too.

mathanxiety · 16/01/2023 03:28

'Old American lady...'
Hmm

It's a gorgeous name imo. Elegant, a classic, recognizable but not at all overused.

VenusClapTrap · 16/01/2023 06:13

It’s quite pretty but overly long and will get shortened, and the short forms Cece and Sissy are not nice. Prefer Celia.

Oncemoreforluck · 16/01/2023 06:27

Not a fan, sorry.
I know one who is always called Celia, or Cee, because Cecilia is a bit of a mouthful

tinytemper66 · 16/01/2023 06:28

Love this. It is a family name x

SpringIntoChaos · 16/01/2023 06:44

Gorgeous name OP 💗 I currently have a Cecilia in my class (Year 2) and she's absolutely fab (only one I've ever taught in almost 30 years 👍).

inquisitorgeneral · 16/01/2023 21:01

I think it's lovely and I would consider it for my own daughter if my husband liked it. I think the connection with the saint outweighs the supposed meaning.

KangarooKenny · 16/01/2023 21:18

Prefer Cecilia. Love Cece for short.

Rockmehardplace · 16/01/2023 22:00

love it.

Enko · 17/01/2023 09:00

It's a beautiful name but the Simon and Garfunkel lyrics are really not nice. So if that's a concern I'd stay clear.

I still love the name though.

LulooLemon · 17/01/2023 11:56

Lovely name

DontMakeMeShushYou · 17/01/2023 12:00

I'd need to start singing every time I heard it!

What about Cecily?

HallieHufflepuff · 17/01/2023 16:59

People just can't get over this song that was released over 50 years ago!! 🙄
I like the name OP (I want to use it too) but some are trying to put me off because there's a song with the name Cecilia in it
