I don’t think Carmine is a good name but I was thinking maybe Dante

Can you give more context? Why an Italian name? What feel are you going for?

I wanted Emilio or Lorenzo for DS (I am half Italian) but DH wasn’t keen.

Other options I liked were: Luca, Angelo, Leonardo (Leo).

Elio. I’ve been in love with it since hearing it.

Also Raphael shortening to Rafi?

I also have a soft spot for anything Gian-

Gian-Luca
Gian-Carlo etc

Do you want a name that is currently commonly used in Italy? Because they aren't btw.

Carmine is ancient. I teach one and he hates it (despite being named after his grandfather) Never met a Dante.
In my classes I've got the usual Francesco X 10000000 and Luca X 100000000. Mattia is very popular these days as is Alessio, Andrea etc and all the Gian+something else names.
