Sylvie or Lottie

I must have literally looked at every single name there is by this point. The only name me and my dh agree on and like more than any other is Charlotte (nn Lottie) but I keep coming back to Sylvie! DD1’s first name is two syllable and ends in a. Dh isn’t that keen but I’m hoping he’ll concede once he’s seen me go through labour again, as I get the impression he’d have let me name DD1 yoda if I’d so wanted after seeing me give birth! Blush what are your thoughts given a choice between the two?!

I’ve pitched Sylvie to dh again and he’s adamant he doesn’t like it (although I’ve agreed to a third as long as I get to call her Sylvie if it’s another girl Grin) so Charlotte/Lottie it is! Smile

@DotDotDotDotDot I stupidly hadn’t considered this but we do live somewhere where there is an emphasis on the ‘t’!

@IamnotwhouthinkIam Thankyou- this is really helpful! DD1 has a very unusual name (less than 20 born in the country in her year I think) which has made picking a name for the second much harder! But I do think it goes very well with Lottie and actually less well with Sylvie

Sylvie every time! I absolutely love it - it's one of my final two.

To me Sylvie is more artsy whereas Charlotte/Lottie is a bit prim and proper. Not that Charlotte is a bad name at all - just not my style :)

Ah, I can see why picking a name is harder if DD1 has a very unusual name Smile. As you probably know, Lottie (top 60) and Charlotte (top 20) are both very popular - much more so than Sylvie despite it gradually rising.

But ultimately it really has to be a name you both like as much as "working" with DD1's name - and Charlotte is one of those "can't go wrong" names for girls imo (like Emma, Eleanor, Alice, Anna etc) whose history means it feels pretty timeless even though technically it wasn't very popular in the mid 20th century.

Just a thought though, if it's the "Lottie" sound you like - have you also considered relatively uncommon but classic Juliet with the nn Ettie/Etta? (obviously there is similar Harriet too for the same nn but but that's much more popular).

I love Sylvie.

I would choose Charlotte/Lottie.

MadeOfStarStuff · 11/01/2022 19:45

I really love Charlotte known as Lottie

If DH still isn’t keen on Sylvie when the baby arrives you shouldn’t use it, you should both love her name

Sylvie
Charlotte is lovely but it’s way overused
