Sirius is nicer

FrecklesMalone · 05/01/2022 17:04

I don't know how to pronounce it but sounds like orifice when I try 😂

BruceBogtrottersWife · 05/01/2022 17:10

For some reason it made me think of reeds, like pond reeds.

And I knew it was god of the underworld too, but that's where my brain went first Grin
I agree with a PP, if he's going to be a 'Si' (Cy) he's going to have a lifetime of telling people his real name isn't Simon.

Santaisstilleatingmincepies · 05/01/2022 17:11

I have a Cyrus.. Never anything but positive comments!!

SnowyPetals · 05/01/2022 17:15

Only suitable with exotic surnames. Osiris Braithwaite not so much.

flippertyop · 05/01/2022 17:16

I love Egyptology. Was going to call my daughter Isis - luckily we went for Cleo. I would have it as a middle name - it's a bit wanky as a first name.

RockinHorseShit · 05/01/2022 17:22

No, just no🥴

& I usually love an unusual name

PlainJane1000 · 05/01/2022 17:32

I'm confused by the Cy spelling of the nn?

Dilbertian · 05/01/2022 17:39

Really? The god who was chopped into bits by his brother. Who then deliberately Osiris's penis into the Nile to be eaten by the fish, in order to prevent him returning in the afterlife.

"Hey, Sy, what's your name about, then?"

If you want to use Cy as a nickname, go for Cyrus instead.

flippertyop · 05/01/2022 17:48

@Dilbertian this is true. Certainly not a wanly name as he has no penis 😂

toastofthetown · 05/01/2022 17:56

I quite like it. There’s an American football player called Osiris St. Brown, who has brothers called Equanimeous and Amon-Ra. Their father is called John Brown and he always disliked his very common name and wanted to give his sons names that would stand out more.

Buddhabowl · 05/01/2022 18:03

I like Cyrus.
I know a man called Cy, just Cy not short for anything. He suits it.

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 05/01/2022 18:04

Specsavers was my first thought, sorry!

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 05/01/2022 18:05

I'm not sure if it's their own brand but they definitely sell them

I think they are an own brand, but their upmarket brand - they price them as designer specs. I've never seen them anywhere other than Specsavers.

Gladioli23 · 05/01/2022 18:06

I don't think many people would name their child Hades, and I'm pretty sure Osiris is the Egyptian equivalent...

ToastCrumbsOnAPlate · 05/01/2022 18:08

They make trainers.

TheVanguardSix · 05/01/2022 18:08

No. It's not a nice name.
Just go with Cyril or Simon and do 'Cy' or 'Si' if the nickname is what's grabbing you the most.

Figgygal · 05/01/2022 18:10

Very try hard sorry op

He should have changed his own name and spared his poor kids!
Luredbyapomegranate · 05/01/2022 20:55

I’d assume you were an Egyptologist..

I don’t think it’s that bad.

LethargicActress · 05/01/2022 21:04

I like it because I like ancient Egyptian stories, but your kid would get a really hard time when they do that topic at school. Osiris was murdered by his brother, bits of his body sent off all over the pace and then he was brought back to life by his wife Isis, which is another name that should be lovely but has a negative connection.

Also, cy is not a nn that makes sense, oz or ozzy would come more naturally to Osiris.

Yes, high end Specsavers own brand
nocoolnamesleft · 06/01/2022 00:48

So god of the underworld, killed by his brother Set, his body chopped into multiple pieces, which his wife Isis tried to recover, but his penis was missing as it was swallowed by a fish. That's the vibe you're going for?

whatausername · 06/01/2022 01:01

@ASOMIM some people on this thread are being really ill-mannered.

The sound of the name is lovely, imo, but might be a bit much for a child to pull off. Especially if they are a quiet or shy character. Cyrus is a great name, Simon less so but does give Si as a nickname. Sirius or Silas might be options.

On the other hand, if you move in circles where the wild and wonderful are de rigeur then have at it!

Snugglybuggly · 06/01/2022 01:07

@LongestBedtimeStoryEver

Isn’t that the name of specsavers own-brand glasses?
