Thoughts on Rue?

Like others have said I don't think it works as a full name because of the meaning of the word. Why not use it as a shortening for another name?

Ruth
Ruby
Rowena

FindingMeno · 19/12/2021 21:58

I love it.
Rune or Runa could be alternatives.

Animood · 19/12/2021 22:18

RuPaul Charles?

Could be used for either sex haha

CherryRedDMs · 19/12/2021 22:20

Love it, I wish it had crossed my mind when I had a baby to name.
My first association would be with the herb.

bumbledeedum · 19/12/2021 22:21

I know a Roo, pronounced the same as Rue but she's short for Veronica

treacletartpudding · 19/12/2021 22:24

I shorten my ds's name to Roo

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/12/2021 22:27

I know a Rhu, but his name is Rhuadri. It suits him.

Gingernaut · 19/12/2021 22:31

@babouchette

Makes me think of the little one that gets bumped off in the Hunger Games.
That was my first thought too.

Then the idea of 'rue the day'.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 19/12/2021 22:32

I think Ruth then shorten to Rue

Ceramide · 19/12/2021 22:37

Robyn
Rae
Romy
Aruna
Aria

MrsBobDylan · 19/12/2021 22:41

I like it, especially given the herb connection a pp mentioned.

Kite22 · 19/12/2021 22:44

Another who wouldn't want to name a child a word that means 'regret' - seems very sad.

Why not go with 'Ruth' ?

RubyRoses · 19/12/2021 22:49

My dd is Roo (nn) and I love it! Not so sure as a full name but if you love it that's all that matters.

ThatLibraryMiss · 19/12/2021 22:50

@HunkyPunk

Rue is also a plant, otherwise known as herb-of-grace. I think it would be a lovely, unusual name!
It's an abortifacient, albeit not a very safe one, widely used in the MIddle Ages and before, with a bitter taste and a nasty smell.
Jayaywhynot · 19/12/2021 22:52

I knew a fella called rue, couldn't get kangaroo out of my head, plus he was an arsehole 🙄

MelloYellow · 19/12/2021 22:56

Love it but spelt ‘Roux’

Havanalily1806 · 19/12/2021 22:57

YouTuber/"influencer" whatever you call it these days has named her daughter Otillie Rue

I always liked ruex as a middle boys name but can't get past the butter and flower thing...

I do think rue is a pretty middle girls name though

Omicrone · 19/12/2021 22:59

Yes, same here.

And it does have negative connotations with its meaning. I do actually quite like it as a name but I probably wouldn't use it for a child.

Elieza · 19/12/2021 23:01

I don’t think I’d name my child after a herb used in medieval times to cause abortion.

However as a shortened version or nickname of another full name it’s fine.

I do think of the golden girls though 😀

TakeYourFinalPosition · 19/12/2021 23:03

I know a Ruby & a Reuben who are both known as Rue.

Mischance · 19/12/2021 23:05

In English rue is either a herb or means regret. I would think of something else if I were you.

powershowerforanhour · 19/12/2021 23:06

I think of:

You must wear your rue with a difference.

Then fucker will rue the day!!

Both quite depressing. Ok as short for something else like Ruby.

reallyalurker · 20/12/2021 02:01

There's an uncommon name Ruhannah for which Rue could be a shortening.

nightdune · 20/12/2021 04:42

Not a fan of Ruby. I love Ruth and it's meaning but DH isn't sure he does. Feels like we've read every girls name that exists and still can't find something we both love.

Eli is the boys name we have picked out. Levi and Lev are our backup names.

I have a ‘Roux’. There were some raised eyebrows at first but now it’s just normal
