Already have a Rory and love the name Robin (possible nickname Bobby) Also have another child with an unrelated name if that makes a difference.

I think they are perhaps slightly too similar. Will there be a big age gap between thrr we brothers?

I do like the name Robin. How about
Jasper
Milo
Felix

TuftyMarmoset · 17/12/2021 19:46

Yes I think they are a bit too similar personally, sorry.

Turtletaub · 17/12/2021 19:50

I don't think too similar for siblings at all, but it's like a nice theme. So I do think it makes a diff that you have another child with an unrelated name if it's not the same letter or sound

LawnFever · 17/12/2021 19:53

Yes too similar and I don’t get Bobby from Robin either, sorry

Buddhabowl · 17/12/2021 19:53

So it would be the eldest and youngest that would be Rory and Robin, 6 year gap between them.
In the middle is a boy that has a longer Irish name starting with C. I'm really torn. We find it sooo hard to choose a name as our taste is so different.

Rory and bobby is ok but rory and robin, id avoid the double Ro

DuesToTheDirt · 17/12/2021 19:55

Yes, too similar. Personally I find I get confused when siblings have names that even start with the same letter, say John and Jasper, and have to pause and make sure I've got the right name before I say it out loud!

Buddhabowl · 17/12/2021 19:57

Basically I love Bobby, but DH says it's too cutesy for a man and hes possibly right. Neither of us were keen on Robert so Robin came to mind.
I tend to prefer cuter, softer names and DH prefers stronger names, so I was surprised when he agreed to Robin. Rory was perfect as a gentle sounding name but also strong and traditional so we both loved it.

I love Bobby too
What about Billy? Your h will probably say thats too cute as well!

freshcarnation · 17/12/2021 20:17

The Robin I know is called Robbie

DixieSun · 17/12/2021 20:19

I think b

DixieSun · 17/12/2021 20:19

Too soon. I think Bobby from Robin is too much of a stretch.

Buddhabowl · 17/12/2021 20:46

I don't think Bobby is that much of a stretch. I can imagine him being Robin Bobin and that becoming Bobby fairly naturally.
Some names my DH has agreed to but I'm not sure about
Leon
Elliot

Some he might agree to with persuading
Samuel (Sammy)
Marley (highly unlikely unless I drug him during the birth)
Zachary

His top names
Seamus
Leonard (Lenny)

I don't think they're too similar at all. The Ro in Robin doesn't sound the same as in Rory to me. They have different endings. No more of a problem to me than something like Sarah and Sally.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/12/2021 23:17

It’s a different Ro sound - I think it’s fine -

DramaAlpaca · 18/12/2021 01:06

I don't think they are too similar.

NuffSaidSam · 18/12/2021 01:11

I love Leon and Elliot.

I don't think Rory and Robin are too similar though.

IVflytrap · 18/12/2021 13:35

Bobby isn't a stretch at all. Both Bobby and Robin were originally diminutives of the name Robert, so they're both related.

I think Rory and Robin are a bit similar, but not too much, if you really love Robin.

FWIW, I also know a Toby with the nickname Bobby. I don't believe that nicknames always have to completely match a person's formal name.
