Hi all,

We are having a baby boy but just cannot decide what to call him! We've got a short list of names we like, but none of them are jumping out at us right now. I think we may have to wait until he's here and we can see his face before we make our final decision! His middle name will be Matthew, and our surname is two syllables. This baby naming lark is so hard!

Bryn
Dylan
Finn
Flynn
Kester
Kit
Quinn
Torin

As you can see, we're not hugely traditional in our taste and we tend to like strong sounding names. Any other suggestions based on our list? Thanks everyone x

Kit, all the way

Not sure why pp thinks the t might not be pronounced?!

NameQuandary · 16/12/2021 22:27

It seems Kester is very much a marmite name 😂

I'm also warming to Torin quite a bit. I love the way it sounds. It's easy to spell and pronounce, but is still a little unusual. Hubby likes it too.

There's a lot of love for Kit though! It is edging ahead for me at the moment. I think he'd just be Kit on the birth certificate though, not Christopher. But I don't know if that would be a mistake? Argh!

I think we'll aim to have a final three names shortlisted by the time he arrives, then decide once he's earth side. I can't wait to see what he looks like! ❤

My favourite is Torin by a long way. It's not a made up name at all!

Largethighsbadeyes · 16/12/2021 22:31

I like Finn and Kit

Bimblybomeyelash · 16/12/2021 22:36

They all sound fairly traditional to me! I could imagine most of them being the name of a character like the gardeners apprentice in ‘the secret garden’! Apart from Quinn perhaps, I Much prefer Quentin.

Bimblybomeyelash · 16/12/2021 22:37

I do love Kit. It was on my boy shortlist along with Angus and Hector.

NameQuandary · 16/12/2021 22:42

@Bimblybomeyelash yes, they are quite 'Secret Garden'-esque aren't they? Grin I love Angus too - little Gus for short!

I suppose when I said 'traditional' I meant Thomas, William, Benjamin etc which are all fantastic names, but we already have friends and family members with those names, so we're trying to think a little outside the box!

Thanks to everyone who has made suggestions for us - I particularly like Jude and Max Smile

Kester can be shortened to Kit!

That's what I would do.

NameQuandary · 16/12/2021 22:50

@LozMarieFielder thank you for your suggestions, some lovely ones there. I adore Arwyn! But sadly it wouldn't work with our surname 😭

My eldest is called Flynn. He's never been called Finn like a previous poster said lol

My other boy is called Toby but it's more of a common name :)

Bedknobsnbroomstix · 16/12/2021 23:49

I think you may also like Soren or Tobin? Forgot to add suggestions to the earlier post. And for Welsh names, Glyn and Gwyn would be so refreshing to hear now.

I know a little Talan as well, you may like that.

Luredbyapomegranate · 16/12/2021 23:52

Kester, could use Kit as nn

ResentfulAF · 17/12/2021 00:04

I like a lot on your list, Torin especially. May be off base with some of these names but to me they have a similar vibe:

Finnian
Jim
Ivor
Roland
Emmett
Emlyn
Lachlan
Sandy
Cormac
Sulllivan
Emory
Dougal
Alden

NameQuandary · 17/12/2021 08:08

@ResentfulAF great list, thank you! I really like Emlyn. Emmy is a sweet nickname too. And I love Dougal! So cute 💙 he could choose to be Doug or Dougie when he's older. So much to think about!

Kit is great and goes well with Matthew. I also thought Toby or Corin looking at your list.

DoodleBelle · 17/12/2021 08:17

I like Finn and Kit. Never heard of Kester before (neither has my phone) but it’s growing on me actually.

WildCherryBlossom · 17/12/2021 08:18

Torin really stands out from your list. It has a lovely quiet strength to it.

NameQuandary · 17/12/2021 09:49

@Lemonlemon88 Corin is gorgeous! That's going on the list, thank you Grin

@DoodleBelle I love Finn too, but hubby says it just makes him think of Star Wars. He also thinks it's too popular, but I said it's popular because it's an awesome name! I love Kester too, but think you and I may be in the minority 😂

@WildCherryBlossom thank you - it was a bit of a late entry wild card from me but I'm really starting to love it. It also goes well with Matthew. I keep walking around the house and saying all the names out loud to try them out 🤪

I really like Torin and Quinn. Both strong names that aren't overused.

sageandbasil · 19/12/2021 21:42

I've just had a daughter but if she was a boy we were going to call him Flynn. I love Quinn too

SummerLew · 22/12/2021 12:10

I like Finn best, I have a 20 year old one.
I met an awful Kester recently so that really puts me off the name.
Torin and Dylan are nice too but Finn all the way!
Kit is too much of a nickname and is a bit 'celeb'

Marimaur · 22/12/2021 14:00

Finn

Happenchance · 22/12/2021 17:00

I prefer Flynn from your list.

Other suggestions:
Fenn
Aneurin nn Nye
Shay
Lucian
Nils
Frey

DancerPrancerDonnerBlitzen · 22/12/2021 17:27

I like your list!

Especially like Bryn, Kit and Kester.

There was a name I loved for ds but dh vetoed as it was a bit too modern - Bennett? I don't like surname names normally, but for some reason I love that.
