Completely stuck on girl names

Bedknobsnbroomstix · 15/12/2021 23:33

We are totally stuck on girl names. I seem like to like some for a period of time and then say them aloud and go off them when said with our surname; a two syllable beginning with a hard C.

We really want something less popular but quite classy sounding and known. Don't want a lifetime or spelling corrections etc. We don't want anything too long and ideally would rather it can't be shortened. Help??? :(

The tricky thing with not wanting a name that can be shortened is that once you get short names they tend to get lengthened instead (e.g. Rose -> Rosie, Anne -> Annie).

Anna is a fabulous name.

Be weary of giving her a name you can't shorten as she may not thank you for limiting her options. My names Clare and I despise it. I've never truly forgiven my parents for calling me it. Also keep in mind most names can be shortened or lengthened.

Most names can be shortened in some way (or lengthened with an "ie" if 1 syllable like Eve, Rose, Jane etc) - but these less common names at least don't have a really obvious nickname to me (and fit your other categories of not too long, classy sounding and well known imo):
Serena
Celia
Bryony
Verity
Blythe
Tara

TBH though, pretty much everything can be shortened when kids want to shorten it. If they truly can't (Anne), they'll elongate it instead.

I live in Australia and I’m telling you now they can and will shorten anything (Sarah- Sas) and lengthen anything (Lynn - Lynno) etc.

Nina is a big hit with us, thank you!

I also really like Cora and Lara. Still possibility of "Ni", "Cor", "Lar"...(This is how lazy the name habits are in our area!) but I think they are beautiful!

Clara is lovely too but not sure about the alliteration that we would have with Cora and Clara and our surname?

Anna perfectly fits the bill but we can't use it unfortunately.

@Awwlookatmybabyspider that's interesting to know. I too have a one syllable name and love that's it doesn't get shortened, I don't think anyone's ever lengthened it either, aside from my little sis. I think that's what draws me to shorter names because I notice myself how much I shorten other names and they lose their quality a lot of the time.
