Expecting a second baby boy next year. Interested in views on Walter, which I think I love but someone today told me it was “posh” sounding.

What do you think? Previously liked Wilfred but so many of those about now…

No, it's too wet

Lulu1919 · 14/12/2021 18:41

I know a Walter he gets Walt at school

Roselilly36 · 14/12/2021 18:41

Don’t call your beautiful baby boy Walter, it’s just awful. I am usually positive when it comes to name choices, but I draw the line at Walter. Nicknames would be Wally or Walt, no just no.

TuftyMarmoset · 14/12/2021 18:47

Well I like Walther von der Vogelweide (famous German poet) but I would be concerned about the shortening to Wally as well

TuftyMarmoset · 14/12/2021 18:50

Walther von der Vogelweide is pronounced Val-ter btw - stronger name than the English version and not sure the English sound is enough to bring that connotation or if you’d just get Disney etc.

inmyslippers · 14/12/2021 18:50

I love it. I think Walt from breaking bad

NeedsCharging · 14/12/2021 18:52

Ahh I try not to comment on baby names but Walter is awful.
It's Walt or Wally.

There are classic names that age well ( as in suit any age) like William or Edward but Walter is up there with Gary for me. Sorry OP.

Classica · 14/12/2021 18:53

It reminds me of American Walters like Walt Whitman or Walter Matthau and they're not bad namesakes to have.

Not my style of name but I could imagine growing to like it.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/12/2021 18:54

Walt Disney didn't do too badly for himself, after all.

Walt Whitman, Walter Raleigh ...

Hadn't realised Walter Becked was dead (actually, I probably had, but had forgotten). RIP, Walter, and thanks for the music. First CD we ever bought in the 80s was a Steely Dan compilation. Wonderful stuff.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/12/2021 18:54

Becker. Apols.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/12/2021 18:55

Walter Matthau! How could I have forgotten him. The Odd Couple is a hysterically funny film.

Lockdownbear · 14/12/2021 18:57

Wattie is another common nickname for Walter, I'm sure it'd due a comeback

iwanttobeonleave · 14/12/2021 18:59

I immediately shortened it to Wally.

I don't dislike it but there are better names.

luverlybubberly · 14/12/2021 18:59

Just checking that your surname isn't White?

Walter White is the lead character in Breaking Bad and while it may not age well in the future, people who are adults now will thinking drug dealer

luverlybubberly · 14/12/2021 19:00

Children are more likely to think Walt Disney if that's ok with you ? (Some people don't like
Disney)

Kanaloa · 14/12/2021 19:01

Makes me think of Walter White. Not the best association in the world but probably the most contemporary for the name Walter. I’m not massively keen on the sound of it but there are worse names… Libatius springs to mind.

Classica · 14/12/2021 19:03

Walter Matthau! How could I have forgotten him. The Odd Couple is a hysterically funny film.
Such a good film
TyrannosaurusRights · 14/12/2021 19:03

I really like it but as we have military links we can’t use it.

Classica · 14/12/2021 19:06

@TyrannosaurusRights

I really like it but as we have military links we can’t use it.
why is that?
AgathaX · 14/12/2021 19:13

Not keen at all. It's not a named that's aged well.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/12/2021 19:25

Gun manufacturer/brand?

MistletoeMeadow · 14/12/2021 19:41

Interesting…I think there are more that are less keen on Walter than those that are pro. I think I’m going to reconsider Confused

Does it matter what stranger thinks ? No name is going to be 100% approved. Don't forget that the demographic or this site is not reflective of the real world. Thanks

MistletoeMeadow · 14/12/2021 19:52

@luverlybubberly
You are quite right that it shouldn’t matter but I’m not the kind of confident person that doesn’t care what others think! I don’t want to give my baby a name that a significant proportion of people might think is awful. Going to consider demoting it to a middle name…

Love it! It sounds good when the ‘t’ is pronounced if people say wa er it doesn’t have the same charm.
