Baby girls you know??

Hello all 🙂 I’m expecting a girl imminently and am having a wobble over her name. I really love a very common girl’s name (top 10) but I don’t actually know any babies or toddlers with it. I’m just wondering if people could name the baby and toddler girls that you know or that are in your children’s nurseries? I feel like all the babies I know are Isla/Ava/Mya type- names, but I’m yet to hear the one I want to use.

Very torn as I’ve always loved the name, but also have never wanted a common name for my child (I was one of 3 Sophies in my tutor group and it was quite confusing/annoying!!)

Thanks so much for any help x

ThirdElephant · 30/11/2021 21:28

@ESGdance

Must be Ivy - new in at no 10?
Ooh, I do actually know an Ivy!

I don't know any babies or toddlers with the top ten girl names. (My two year old has just changed nurseries, and there are no top ten girl names in either. There was a George in both though!)

Top ten names are given to a very small proportion of babies really - under one percent. Use the name you love!

Ask your MW how many she's heard of recently. If she's heard of lots, then you can almost guarantee that there'll be another in the class.

It's not always the case though. DS has a name that was in the top 20 when he was born and had moved up to the top 10. He's never been in a class with another and he's the only one in his friendship group.

Names can be very regional.

Sorry, the name is Lily, it’s my great grandmother’s.

My cousin just had a baby, they've named her Lilly

EnidFrighten · 30/11/2021 21:36

DD is 5, I've heard of one Lily in all the time she's been at nursery, school etc.

ESGdance · 30/11/2021 21:37

Lily is a beautiful, timeless and classic name and also has family relevance for you - sounds perfect

eddiemairswife · 30/11/2021 21:38

I'm old. I had an Aunty Lily and a great-aunt Lily.

RavenclawsRoar · 30/11/2021 21:40

I know two toddlers called Lily. It's a lovely name!

DuggeeHugPlease · 30/11/2021 21:43

There's 1 Lily in a baby group I go to - also Evie, Ella, Ellie, Ivy, and Evangeline. Lots of others but those are the ones that I can remember.

If you love the name use it. I'd be more annoyed to pick a really unusual name and then end up with another one in the class.

chasingkites · 30/11/2021 21:44

I know three baby Lilys. I don't see why the popularity should put you off.

Giraffephan · 30/11/2021 21:44

Lovely name but I know of 4 all under 5 and I don’t know that many kids

Thatsplentyjack · 30/11/2021 21:45

I always thought if I had a dd I would call he lily. I loved that name. Still like it and don't actually know anyone with it, bit I called my dd something else. Have never heard anyone called my dds name irl, or really on TV etc either.

NuffSaidSam · 30/11/2021 21:47

I don't know any baby Lily's, but loads in the 8-15 age group. Same with Eva and Ava, loads 10 years ago, none now.

AliasGrape · 30/11/2021 21:47

Lily is a very nice name. I don't know any and I haven't taught one in a very long time so it must not be as popular around here as it is overall if that makes sense? These things are often regional.

I have a baby/ just turning into a toddler DD - names of girls of a similar age we know are:

Sienna
Madeleine
India
Isabella
Imogen
Ava
Iris
Mia
Amelia
Raine
Elspeth
Anya
Lucy
Luna
Melissa
Beatrix
Nancy
Lottie
Holly
Penny

(We go to a lot of groups haha).

roadwarrior · 30/11/2021 21:49

Lily is a beautiful name OP. I only know of one Lily and she's 15.

bigbluebus · 30/11/2021 21:52

I only know of one Lily - she's 18

Twizbe · 30/11/2021 21:53

I don't know any baby / toddler Lily's. Lots of Penny, Isla, Mia, Charlotte, Amelia and Esme

AuntieStella · 30/11/2021 21:54

If you name your baby Lily, then you'll always know the chances are she'll come acros one or two others. And you'll be fine with it.

Just imagine that if you called her something like Keren-Happuch and sod's law meant there was another in her class. It would rankle no end. OK, chances of as rare a Biblical name as that are low, but I hope you get my drift.

I isn't know so many babies these days: the ones come across recently are: Emmy, Margot, Shelby, Alice, Minnie

ColdShouldersWarmTummy · 30/11/2021 21:55

No Lily's in DDs nursery class, or in any of the baby groups we go to. Most of the babies round here seem to have "unusual" names - lots of granny chic but also Greek, and some 50s style names creeping in. There was a little girl Reggie at Rhyme Time today (I'm guessing short for Regina). Also a Bertie (who rather hilariously often sits next to little boy Ernie Grin.

Twizbe · 30/11/2021 21:55

Popularity doesn't matter though if you really like a name.

My daughter is one of only 19 given that name the year she was born. One of the others was in our baby yoga class. I've also met 2 others that are a few years older than her... sometimes it happens

wertheppl · 30/11/2021 21:56

None in my kids nursery and there is about 100 kids go there. Oh there is an Eva-Lily but that's as close as it gets.
My dh has a distant relative called Lily she is 15. I don't know any other kids with that name or hear it often. I'm in central Scotland so I do think different regions have names that are more or less popular.
