First baby expected in April. Surname is long, complicated and South African so wanting something quite simple and classic for a first name. Current favourites:

Alice
Iris
Clara
Rose

My favourite changes week by week, currently love Iris and DH’s favourite is Rose. Other suggestions welcome!

What a lovely list. It's hard to choose a favourite, I think any of them would be a good choice.

MrsBertBibby · 30/11/2021 19:42

I find Clara and Alice very stuffy and smug. Rose is a bit meh, prefer Rosa.

Iris is gorgeous with the right surname.

DurhamDurham · 30/11/2021 19:45

They're all lovely names but I especially like Clara and then Alice.

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/11/2021 20:14

They're all very nice - I'd go for Clara, because it's not as overused as the others, though still pretty popular.

Stella, Jasmine, Ines and Flora are less common alternatives.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/11/2021 21:08

They’re all nice enough names. There’s not much to dislike about them. I do find Rose a bit boring though. I prefer Rosa.
Iris is my favourite.
Other ideas.
April (After her birth month)

Maeve
Mabel
Florence
Anna

I don't think you could go wrong with any of them. Personally, Clara is my favourite though

bxbynxmelxver4 · 01/12/2021 11:50

All lovely

Viviennemary · 01/12/2021 11:51

I like Iris best. But they are all nice.

katielou987 · 01/12/2021 11:53

Alice followed by Iris x

SmallProvincial · 01/12/2021 11:54

We were choosing between Alice, Clara and Rose for DD.

We chose Rose. It works well.

We only discounted Clara because:

  1. it rhymes with our surname (like a superhero name)
  2. some people pronounce it 'clare-ah' while we pronunce it 'clar-ah' and I didn't want it to be confusing.
DukkaDukka · 01/12/2021 12:02

They’re all just really popular names which puts me off. I do like Clara.

groovergirl · 01/12/2021 12:09

If you're torn between Alice and Clara you could consider Clarice.
Clarice Beckett was a famous Australian painter. There's also Clarice Cliff, the ceramic artist.

mistermagpie · 01/12/2021 12:16

My daughter is called Iris so obviously that's my favourite. People say it's popular but I've only met one other, who was a bit older than mine, so it might depend where you live.

I also love Alice too, you can't really go wrong with any of your names to be honest!

RobinPenguins · 01/12/2021 12:17

Clara and Alice are my favourites of your list.

TheVanguardSix · 01/12/2021 12:22

Iris and Alice

Theoldwoman · 01/12/2021 13:12

Alice, without a doubt.

sunflowerroses · 01/12/2021 13:14

Really love Rose and Alice, really like Clara and I don't mind Iris.

midsomermurderess · 01/12/2021 14:03

I like them all, in the order presented by you.

Songbird21 · 01/12/2021 16:20

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions! Her surname really will be enough to contend with on the unusual front so not too worried about them being popular names. Although we ruled out Ivy because it's in the top 10.

Interesting that Iris is perceived as so popular, Alice is much higher in the top 100 and I haven't met any. Point taken about it being a bit of a 'willowy' name! Better hope she takes after DH rather than me... I do like Iris Murdoch though Grin

All absolutely beautiful and can’t go wrong. My favourite is Clara by an inch but love them all.

Camii · 02/12/2021 15:54

I love Alice
What about Cora if you like Clara
