Amazing names from your family tree

Following a conversation at work today.

I had an (great great ?) Aunty Ceinwen. Much further back on the family tree we found a Rosina, which I thought was rather pretty.

A colleague recently discovered he had a distant cousin with the first name Macdara, which is apparently a local Irish saint, and means Son of Oak!

Any cool or unusual names from way back in your family tree?

My dad found a few ladies called Alima in our family tree, and he's not sure why, he hasn't found any traces of the name elsewhere

One my maternal grandmother's side there were a lot of sailors and they had a tradition of giving boys the middle name Nelson and a first name beginning with A (for Admiral), so Arthur Nelson D , Alfred Nelson D , which I thought was a rather cool tradition.

Someone did their family tree and we turned up in it. We had a Zilpha in the nineteenth century

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 29/11/2021 22:02

@OneWildNightWithJBJ I think Rosina must have been popular at one time. It's also the name of a character in Poldark!

My mum had an aunt Mafeking. The siege of Mafeking (in South Africa) was going on at the time in 1900 but she was born in London to a London family! Mum always felt sorry for her.

I broke the link in the family tree going back centuries by not naming our son ‘Archibald’. FIL was very disappointed. It’s DH middle bloody middle name as MIL refused it as a first name.

I also have a Rosina in my family tree. There is also a Smith (first name) and a Kirby Whitby (also first names). All 3 are in the same family tree.
In another line of ancestry are a couple of Cornelius's, an Agnes and an Archibald.

wejammin · 29/11/2021 22:20

There's 5 women called Christiana in my family tree, starting in around 1700. Very pretty but does not work at all with my surname.

Floralnomad · 29/11/2021 22:21

My nans middle name was Britannia , it’s hideous but certainly different .
