A sister for Martha

DD2 is due in less than two weeks and we still haven’t picked a name. I am getting really stressed as DD1 was over a week early and I really don’t want the baby to be born before we’ve chosen something! Really different this time around as we picked DD1’s name straight away and both loved it.

We have gone back and forth on names a lot but just can’t find anything we really love. Lots that are nice and we both like, but nothing that’s stuck. We like classic, elegant, strong, old fashioned names, which will suit a grown woman as well as a little girl.

Please hit me with your suggestions! Thanks so much!

@Marthasmum2020

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Lots of lovely names here. A lot of them we have considered as well. It feels like as we’re getting so close to her being here we are like deer in headlights.
Please update us (me!)

Dorothea.

My first thought was Esther, or for less of a Biblical connection, Elspeth.

Martha is a lovely name and was on our list if we had DDs. We also considered:

Phoebe
Lucy
Rachel
Nina
Rosa

Marthasmum2020 · 28/11/2021 13:06

Names we like are:

Rosa
Clara
Lydia

I’d appreciate any thoughts on them. I think I’m leaning towards Clara but is that too similar?

Polly, Nancy, Nell or Phoebe.

TatianaBis · 28/11/2021 13:44

Rosa out of those, Clara is ok but a bit meh, really dislike Lydia.

Rosa, by a mile. Hate Lydia and Clara is quite stuffy, and has the same vowel sounds as Martha.

Beatrice

I loved Clara if no. 3 baby had been a girl after Martha . I did worry about Martha and Clara sounding similar but wld have shortened to Clarrie possibly

marthasmum · 28/11/2021 21:03

What about Martha and Clarissa? Sound well together and she could be Clarrie or Clara or Lissy for short

saywhatwhatnow · 28/11/2021 22:03

Alice

Marthasmum2020 · 28/11/2021 22:15

@marthasmum

I don’t like Clarissa much. It has a different feel to me and seems a bit fussy? But I think the main worry I have about Martha and Clara is that they sound quite similar. But maybe no one would really think too much about it unless I mention it.

I think Martha and Clara sound odd together - they sound very similar.

AnFiadhRua · 29/11/2021 09:27

I like Lydia. How about Rose or Claire? They have the simplicity of Martha without the matching Continental -a endings in Rosa and Clara?

Crunchymum · 29/11/2021 10:54

I know a few Martha's (of varying ages) and some of their sisters are:

Amelia
Alice
Tabitha
Beatrix
