Harriet or Eleanor.. (Hallie or Ellie as nicknames) not bothered about popularity.

Harriet will get harri

emmathedilemma · 26/11/2021 13:41

I would think Harry or Hattie from Harriet not Hallie.
I prefer Eleanor / Ellie.

LittleMysSister · 26/11/2021 13:41

I LOVE the name Harriet :) I think it's generally shortened to Hattie though?

Hallie could be a separate name in its own right though if you like that more.

BubbleCoffee · 26/11/2021 13:42

Eleanor

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 26/11/2021 13:43

Love Hallie and Eleanor but Harriet wouldn’t shorten to Hallie in my mind.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 26/11/2021 13:44

If you want Hallie I'd call her Hallie, calling her Harriet will mean she's going to be Hattie, Harri or even Ettie not Hallie.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 26/11/2021 13:46

I would steer clear of Ellie as it's very boring and there are thousands everywhere you turn.

Harriet is absolutely lovely, but agree that it would most likely be shortened to Hattie. And you can't really control what their nicknames become once they're school age, so it depends how bothered you are about that.

Mamabear1921 · 26/11/2021 13:54

Thanks all. Have seen Hallie as a nn on other sites and liked the sound of it as no 't' s (family drop their t's).

We are totally 50/50!

If you have family who drop their 't' s and like the name Hallie then I'd definitely just go with that as her name otherwise it will bug you whenever they say Harriet or Hattie.

MilkTooth · 26/11/2021 13:58

There's a cool character called Hallie in Barbara Kingsolver's novel Animal Dreams, but it's short for Halimeda (and actually, she ends up being murdered by Contras in Nicaragua).

User5252727 · 26/11/2021 14:01

I like both. Harriet is prettier than Eleanor imo but I've never heard Hallie as a short version and I think most people will revert to Harry. If you really want Hallie then just call her Hallie.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 26/11/2021 14:07

I don't like the name Harriet at all, just find it so drab. But Hallie is lovely.

Ellie is a bit overdone at the moment.

KirstenBlest · 26/11/2021 15:57

Ellie has been overpopular and Eleanor is not as nice as Harriet.
Commented elsewhere that I prefer Hattie but seeing as you don't want Ha-ie, go with Hallie short for Harriet. I don't like Harri at all and it's a Welsh boy's name

BabyBunnyMama · 26/11/2021 16:04

I have an Ellie (nickname, her first name is actually Elizabeth) so I am biased.
I have never heard Hallie for Harriet before, I quite like Ettie as a nickname for Harriet though 😊

Mamabear1921 · 26/11/2021 16:04

Thank you! Yes Hattie doesn't sounds as nice when it isn't said with the 't's which is what I'm worried about. Hallie seems like a good option and if she is called something else at school then that's her choice.

Still love Eleanor but would probably just get called Ellie all the time and i prefer Hallie.

And in terms of Ellie being over popular - my DD is 2.5 and since having her haven't came across one other Ellie. Some Ellas and Elsies but no Ellies, so I don't think it's become over popular personally.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/11/2021 16:07

Harriet and Eleanor are both great names. As others have said, if you want to call her Hallie just call her Hallie - it really isn't a version of Harriet.

KirstenBlest · 26/11/2021 16:12

Ellie has been a very popular name since the 1990s.
I know several but some are Ellie, some short for Eleanor,Elise, Eloise etc and some are Ellie-May or Ellie-Rose etc

Add Ella and Elle to it and they seem to be everywhere

RupertOscar1999 · 26/11/2021 16:12

I love Ellie!
We were so close to naming our daughter Ellie!

KirstenBlest · 26/11/2021 16:14

Hal is short for Henry or Harry, so there is no reason why you couldn't use it.

I don't get the love for Hallie though. Is it from a tv show?

Darkmatterduck · 26/11/2021 16:19

I love them both, with a similar situation I introduced my daughter as her ‘nickname’ and have it as her preferred name for nursery etc. It’s never been an issue. Ella and Nora are both lovely nicknames for Eleanor.

Watapalava · 26/11/2021 16:23

Don't like Hallie (seems very 80s to me) - it defo wont take as a nickname for Harriet - nicknames cannot be forced - they are usually shortened by others who use them. Hallie is not a nickname of Harriet. I love the name Eleanor but haven't ever chosen it because Ellie is pretty dull as a name these days and it will get shortened.

Harriet is nice but wont necessarily be shortened - i know 3 and all use full name

Pinkhippotato · 26/11/2021 16:23

I like both, and if she's introduced with her 'nickname' that is what people will call her. I rather like Hallie with the option of changing it up to Harriet if she wants to later
