How popular is Ellis?

I know I know, it shouldn't matter - but I don't want him to be one of 4 (like my friends Alfie was!) I quite like it and keep coming back to it but not sure I love it.

Gorgeous name

SleafordSods · 10/11/2021 19:59

I like both the English and the Welsh spelling.

Lovely name OP abs I agree that it's unlikely they're be many others in the class, although you can obviously never guarantee they're won't be 4 others.

Rather effeminate to my ears.
I know two. 16 and 19.

Onlinedilema · 10/11/2021 21:22

I don't know any under 20.

GoingBackTo505 · 10/11/2021 21:26

I really really like it and don't know of any actually. It sounds quite cool but not too weird.

Ellis is my favourite boy name but I've never met one in real life (and believe me I've been looking out for one)
The name Ellis has been falling in the charts for the past few years (dark greener website is the best for checking this) so a pretty safe choice if you're worried about popularity - trajectory is clearly downward

BeKindBeYou · 13/11/2021 07:08

I love this name!!

chipshopElvis · 13/11/2021 07:13

I know one, aged 10 so not overly popular.

HelloDulling · 13/11/2021 07:20

In Wales, it’s fairly common. I know two my DD’s age.

How awful. All boys should be called Brutus.

Or even Grin Grin

I work on a large secondary, we have no pupils called Ellis. My friend has a 22 year old with the name Ellis and he is the only one I know. It’s a lovely name 😁

Fivebeanchilli · 13/11/2021 07:45

I love Ellis. I only know two and they are adults and Welsh. Neither of them have ever had their name shortened (a Mumsnet obsession). I think, if you're in England, you'd be unlucky to have another locally of a similar age.

Mrsorganmorgan · 13/11/2021 07:48

My grandson is called Ellis. He was the only one in his school called this name.

FlamingoDust · 13/11/2021 15:47

More commonly a girls name where I live. Most of the ones I know of range from 3-13

RuthW · 13/11/2021 17:04

Not heard of any Ellis for years. I went to school with a male Ellis ( now 54) and know two female Ellis both early 30s.

Not so much re Ellis, but a poster upthread said that Innes meant 'island'.
Sorry but no. Usually, it's said to be an Anglicisation of Aonghas, for which see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aonghas_(given_name) and www.behindthename.com/name/innes

Innis (Anglicisation of a word meaning island) is pronounced Innish or Inch. See, for example: www.thebottleimp.org.uk/2012/11/gaelic-place-names-eilean-and-innis/
