Not for me. The only one I've known was...well, let's just say a bit of a handful.

WalkingOnSonshine · 07/11/2021 16:42

It’s had a huge jump in popularity over the past 5 years or so, it’s likely to feel very dated to this particular time period if you don’t have wider Scandinavian links.

One of the Little Mix singers named her son this. It seems to be quite popular with some of the younger Instagrammers who are having children too.

Verybritishproblems98 · 07/11/2021 17:42

I love this name! I watch The Middle a lot and that’s the sons name. Great name x

Mrgrinch · 07/11/2021 17:43

Hate it

Chunkymenrock · 07/11/2021 17:47

Greasy, smelly car part.

EgweneWoT · 07/11/2021 17:49

Axel is a lovely name. If you’re keen on it, go for it. 🙂

DontKnowMyOwnName · 07/11/2021 18:05

Funnily i just heard this being used for the first time this evening, someone calling after a little boy in a shop.

Honestly it's not my cup of tea, I like a lot of Skandi style names but this isn't one. I don't like the sound of it and it brings to mind the axle of a car. There's also something about it trying hard to be edgy and cool to my mind.

It's not offensive and like others have said it's getting more and more popular.

AhNowTed · 07/11/2021 18:06

Cool 😎

StiggyZardust · 07/11/2021 18:14

My DS (19) has been at school with 2 Axel's over the years.
I really like it.

RockallMalinHebrides · 07/11/2021 18:18

I hear Axel and think Axl Rose - It's not his real name but an anagram of oral sex.

wavingwhilstdrowning · 07/11/2021 18:20

It's a Hebrew name, I know a few Axels. Popular in Scandinavian and America - I know a Rastafarian Axel and a Jewish Axel. MN hates so many names but referencing Axel Rose in 2021 is absolutely hilarious.

You may think it hilarious but I can guarantee I won't be the only person thinking it.
edgeware · 07/11/2021 18:32

It is a scandinavian/northern european name. Many adult men in those parts are called axel. Also the gruffalo illustrator. Some the mumsnetters on here are showing their xenophobia and stupidity, but what else is new eh.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 07/11/2021 18:34

I think it's fine. I know a couple of Scandinavian Axels so it doesn't sound odd to me.

I came here to say this!
sageandbasil · 07/11/2021 18:49

Thanks for the feedback. Very much a marmite name!! I didn't like it when I first heard it but it's really grown on me. I'm gunna keep it on the list

It’s horrific

BadgeronaMoped · 07/11/2021 18:55

I would think you may be a Streets of Rage fan, I loved Streets of Rage II. It's fairly innocuous as a name, DH watches a dreary programme on Sky and one of the main characters is called Axel, nn Ax. Honestly, if you like it then that's all that matters.

NoJuliana · 07/11/2021 18:58

Great name! Especially if you pronounce the Swedish way with the ‘e’ sound as in ‘bed’ rather than with the ’uh’ sound.

Tal45 · 07/11/2021 18:59

I thought Axl Rose but I'm over 40. I think it's ok.

WonderfulYou · 07/11/2021 19:08

I love it!

I know a couple of students named Axel and they’re all lovely but they’re often judged by some teaching staff before they’ve met them.
However these are teens so if you’re planning to name a baby Axel there will be a lot less older and judgemental teachers around by the time he goes to school.

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 07/11/2021 19:10

It’s harsh sounding and I can’t think of many names I’d pick it over.

furbabymama87 · 07/11/2021 19:11

I agree it sounds harsh. I don't like it at all sorry.

Bonnealle · 07/11/2021 19:12

I’m under 40, but I quite like GNR! I know lots of Axels, I think it’s a pretty popular name now. I didn’t realise it was European, only because I’ve heard mostly Americans called this name.

Etinoxaurus · 07/11/2021 19:14
