What do we think of Donald?

I ask because I know a miserable Donald who blames his name for a sorry old life. Obviously there will be lovely Donalds about but is it going to make a comeback along with the other older style names. I don’t like the sound of the name although McDonald as a surname sounds fine to me. I had a Ronald in my class at school and always felt sorry for him and for Donald. Is it still used in Scotland?

And I was inspired to ask this bu the Horace thread. I think Horace is pretty awful but Donald might trump that.

No!!!!
Everyone stop!!!

Saucery · 06/11/2021 19:40

Only teemed with Huey, Louie and Dewey.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 06/11/2021 19:41

Trump, Duck, so it’s a ‘no’ from me.

My Grandad was Ronald (Ron). I actually think that’s ripe for a come-back, along the lines of other ‘old men’ names.

My cousin is called Donal, which I think is a nice alternative.

“But Donald might trump that“

Grin good one

RiaOverTheRainbow · 06/11/2021 19:42

Ten years ago it would have been fine, but I think it'll be a while before it's usable again.

rrhuth · 06/11/2021 19:44

If shortened to Donnie, as in NKOTB or Osmond, think it is really really nice Grin

Chargreen · 06/11/2021 19:46

Donnie is ok. Donald is an absolute no.

LethargicActress · 06/11/2021 19:49

I hear Donald I think Duck, but I like Donnie because I was a NKOTB fan!

Lucked · 06/11/2021 19:52

Not a fan. Donal is a bit better.

I am sure there a few little Donald’s running around but I don’t see it surging in popularity

MrsSugar · 06/11/2021 20:10

Hmm…. First thought is Donald Duck, Donald Trump and that it’s general an older persons name but I do work with a Donald in his 40s who is such a lovely kind man. Overall ok but not a name I would choose !

I think "where's your trousers?"!
lots33 · 06/11/2021 20:45

Showing my age now but it makes me think of Donald ‘Flathead’ Fisher in Home and Away!

ShinyMe · 06/11/2021 21:34

I think it's too soon from Trump.

But thinking about it, I knew a Donald at uni in Scotland and he was LOVELY. He is a kilt wearing fire juggling unicycle chap.

Bagelsandbrie · 06/11/2021 22:00

Trump.

Ha I actually hadn’t even thought of Trump! That’s just added another level. I do think of ‘where’s ye troosis’ though. I’ve tried to think of it as being possibly cool- Donnie osmond was cool at the same generation as my Donald - but somehow no one can make it sound ok for me. It’s the sound of the word I think.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 07/11/2021 00:30

Don Draper definitely brought it some cachet.

colouringindoors · 07/11/2021 00:31

No. No. No

Donald Trump.

Chocaholic9 · 07/11/2021 00:34

Awful. Will always remind me of Donald Trump.

Lockdownbear · 07/11/2021 00:37

It's up there with names like Derek and Dennis, will make a come back at some point.
I don't think I've met a child called Donald ever, 🤔 I imagine any Donald's would be called after their Grandfather.

Redsparklybucket · 07/11/2021 00:58

It’s my sons middle name after his great grandfather I like it because of the family connections, wouldn’t have picked as a first name tho!

Cissyandflora · 07/11/2021 05:03

The Donald I’m thinking of wasn’t named after anyone- parents just liked it for some reason. He detests it and always has done.
