My partner and I are expecting the birth of our first child, a daughter in 3 weeks! We have been unable to agree on a name, last week while in town we overheard someone talking to their child, and called her Mika. We both love it, but wondered if it was too unusual?

Mika is unusual, but familiar sounding so doesn't sound bizarre. And if there's another Mika in your local area, it's probably fine.

Mee-kah or my-kah? Find out what it means in different cultures, if you are happy go for it. Oh and obviously factor in peer abuse like 'mika the meercat'.

NavyCream · 04/11/2021 22:50

Is it Meeka or M-eye-ka

Blubells · 04/11/2021 22:50

I know a Mika, short for Mikaela

Dirtystreetpie · 04/11/2021 22:50

This was pronounced Mee-ka

Not sure if you’re US or Europe, but in Europe it’s a boy’s name. Not that it should stop you! I like traditionally boy’s names for girls.

Chocolateteabag · 04/11/2021 22:57

How about Kika instead? (Pronounced "kee - ka")

Or Kiki, then can sing the drake song....

DD has an unusual girls name, she seems to like it and there are about 5 other children in her nursery with names that are very unusual. It's a lovely name, although people may get the pronunciation wrong the first time.

Marynotsocontrary · 04/11/2021 23:53

There's a Dutch girls name Mieke (Mee-keh). Cculd that be the name you heard?

KirstenBlest · 05/11/2021 14:52

I know a Meike (My-ka). she's german

Nellesbelles · 05/11/2021 15:52

As long as you don't mind some people saying it wrong sometimes when they first meet her I think it's lovely and not too unusual. Some people get my DD's name wrong the first time they read it but I just correct them as I knownthe spelling can throw people. I've heard a lot stranger names han Mika that's for sure!

WildCherryBlossom · 05/11/2021 20:36

Isn't it Micah? Biblical, usually a boys name but I think I have come across girls with the name before.

PesosBandage · 05/11/2021 20:43

I always thought Micah was My-cah. Whereas I'd say Mika as Mee-cah. I LOVE Mika for a girl. Do it! I sat next to a gorgeous little girl called Mika on a plane once. She was so cute and totally suited her name.

coconutmonkey · 05/11/2021 21:31

I have a lifelong family friend named Meika, pronounced the way you describe. Beautiful for a little girl and still beautiful for an adult. I'm very tempted to use it if I have a girl next time.

WeasilyPleased · 05/11/2021 23:27

I'm really sorry but I wouldn't call a little girl a name that sounds like meeker.

LanaDelBoy · 06/11/2021 00:00

Mika is/was a male singer, had a hit with (the song) Grace Kelly.
Doesn't look like many people will think of that though!

ThiagoSilvasToe · 06/11/2021 00:02

I know a Mika. It's a lovely name.

LydiaFTM · 06/11/2021 00:06

My first thought was also of Mika the singer but that wouldn't put me off. I think it's a lovely name and also like unusual names. If you like it, go for it. You will always get negative (as well as positive) opinions on here so just don't let people sway you if you love a name. It would be boring if everyone liked the same names all the time.

Fivebeanchilli · 06/11/2021 00:11

I like it.
I think of the singer but also Mika Hakkinen nowadays.
Although I know it's a male name in most of Europe I think it works for a girl. I really like the Mieke spelling but think that might end up being more annoying.

LizzieAnt · 06/11/2021 00:51

I guess it depends where the OP lives as they don't sound the same in all accents. They don't in mine, for example, and I would never have made the connection, but it's a point worth considering all right.

That's My-ka. Mika is a version/diminutive of Michael in quite a few European countries.

Then there's the Dutch girls' name Mieke as mentioned above, a diminutive of Maria.

Chunkymenrock · 06/11/2021 08:51

Mieke is nice. What about Heidi, Phaedra or Sasha?

IDidntWearASmileToday · 06/11/2021 08:56

I know an adult female Mika, and I'm a big fan of the male singer, I like it

Ktrv1983 · 30/11/2021 12:56

I'm 26 weeks pregnant with a daughter and I am naming her Blaise Elizabeth, a lot of people have either told me it's a boys name or they have never heard it. My first daughter is named Poppy-Maria
