Given the popularity of Emily & Emilia…

Would you be put off Emmeline?
It’s been my favourite name for ages- very much due to the Pankhurst connection too- but worried she will be lost in a sea of Emmys?

I know two recent baby Emmelines, two Emilys and one Emilia. So it's popular in its own right (among my friends).

But that wouldn't put me off if I liked the name! It's nice, and Emmy is cute. Most Emilys probably won't be Emmy anyway.

I never heard of it but I really like it. Go with it if that’s what you want and don’t be put off by a name being “popular”.

Heartdogs · 02/11/2021 14:16

I really like it. I know one Emily and haven't heard of a single Emilia.

UndeadSlut · 02/11/2021 14:19

Where I am it's the Evs that are more popular than the Ems. Evelyn, Eva, Evie, Everly, Eve - LOADS of them.
Emily/Emilia was more popular a few years back.

I think it’s lovely and quite different to Emily which is ultra common and for me, dull.

toastofthetown · 02/11/2021 14:30

I would be put off. If popularity concerns you, it's sensible to consider how the name will sound amongst other popular names. To me Emmeline blends right in with Emily, Evelyn, Emilia, Amelia, Emma etc and it sounds a bit dull.

AliceMcK · 02/11/2021 14:46

I really like Emmeline but unless I was really set on it I’d definitely be put off the popularity of the name. What about Christabel, Emmelines daughter who was also a famous suffragette.

ofwarren · 02/11/2021 14:50

Lovely name. Much nicer than Emily I think.

I think your friends have excellent naming skills 😂

Emmeline is only rank 333 with 137 babies named it in 2020 but Emily is 15 with 1,896 babies and
Emilia rank 31 with 1,353
So it’s not that I’m worried the name itself is mega popular- I think there are probably pockets of Emmelines- but more that there will be 5 more ‘Em or Emmys’ in the class
Maybe an alternative nickname…not Mel though!

Sorry but yes whilst I’m also very aware of christabel it sounds way too much like tinkerbell- despite the great namesake!

I think it is more distinctive that Emily/lia. Lina for a nickname perhaps?

I had a similar conundrum - our fave name for a DD was a 2-syllable E name, and while it was quite low on the charts and not well-used (or well-liked, but that's another issue! 😆) it just "sounded" popular. In our circle alone there was an Elsie, Ellie, Esme, Ella, Etta and others I'm probably forgetting. At one point I just threw the name out of the contenders completely.

But that's what she ended up as! If you love it, you love it, and I'm so glad we used it. It's a bit too early to see if she blends/gets lost in a sea of similar names though, as she's not yet at nursery.
