So,

I've named my DD Rovenna, and different people pronounce it differently.

How would you pronounce it? Will add the different pronunciations after a few comments, and also say how I pronounce it....

Row Venna

DotDotDotDotDot · 01/11/2021 21:59

Sorry you haven’t told us which one is correct, I’m still none the wiser.

SecretKeeper1 · 01/11/2021 21:59

I’d have pronounced it the same as Ravenna with an “uh” sound rather than emphasising the o or a. What’s the difference between the two pronunciations?

dementedpixie · 01/11/2021 21:59

So what is your pronunciation?

dementedpixie · 01/11/2021 22:00

And is your Row rhyming with hoe or pow?

Smw96 · 01/11/2021 22:06

So I pronounce it

Ro (Row your boat)
ven (like pen)
na ( nuh or nah )

I searched place names in the end as I was so stuck on what to name her🙈 I came across it, and googled how it was said, and watched some videos, before deciding, as how it was said, was obviously a game changer.

I definitely wouldn't have named her it, if it was pronounced...

Ro (your boat)
Ven (start of venus)
Na (nah)

🙈😅

Unfortunately that’s the downside of giving your child a name that’s not very well known - they (and you) will have a lifetime of correcting its pronunciation for people who have just met her for the first time.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 01/11/2021 22:13

I’d have pronounced it
Ro (like Robert)
Ven (like pen)
Na (Nuh like in Helena)

user1745 · 01/11/2021 22:15

Row-veena

Row like row your boat.

Autumnleavesfalling · 01/11/2021 22:15

Op ... I would have pronounced it as you wrote. I like the name.

Tempusfudgeit · 01/11/2021 22:17

Oh, just call the poor kid Rowena.

Smw96 · 01/11/2021 22:20

@SirChenjins
Yes I guess so, my name gets spelt wrong often, even though it's easy to pronounce.
I suppose its just one of those things.

I thought looking at the name, people would have said it how they saw it. No biggy though I suppose.

I have another daughter with a mildly uncommon name, however it's welsh, and we live in Wales, and people often ask how that is pronounced too.
Should have named them something like Jessica and Rhys haha.

You all pretty much got it right, so i am pleased, and grateful for all the responses.

Is it actually used as a girl’s name in Italy or is it the equivalent of calling an English child Tilbury?

youvegottenminuteslynn · 01/11/2021 22:22

Never heard this name before but I would pronounce it Row - Vennuh with an emphases on the second of the three syllables.

Smw96 · 01/11/2021 22:23

@Tempusfudgeit

My son is called Rowan and other Daughter Rhonwen (the welsh version of Rowena) so unfortunately it's been spoken for.

@Autumnleavesfalling

Fantastic, aww thank you. It's not to everyone's taste but I liked it, and my children picked that out of the few remaining. It's different.

Smw96 · 01/11/2021 22:28

@PoppityPop

It's a name of old English Origin, it has been used in England, however its a girls name used mainly in Portugal, Germany and Albania. However I do know someone called Tilbury haha.

@youvegottenminuteslynn

Yes, that it pretty much how I say it. Thank you :)

Smw96 · 01/11/2021 22:48

@DramaAlpaca

Thanks so much❤
Glad to hear so many people would pronounce it the same

The latter.
RacketeerRalph · 01/11/2021 23:08

@SierraJulietGolf

Ruhvenna?
Was trying to work out how to sound out how I'd say it and this is spot on. Thanks!
Namechangedforthethousandthtim · 02/11/2021 05:48

Row (as in row a boat)
Venn
Uh

Smw96 · 02/11/2021 08:12

@Geamhradh

Quick Google search will tell you otherwise 😅

Smw96 · 02/11/2021 08:14

@RacketeerRalph

I often have to try think hard about how to say how I pronounce things, so I'm with you there 🙈
