What do you think of Tesni? Welsh name, meaning 'warmth from the sun'. Would the nickname 'Tess' work?

No

Enko · 31/10/2021 09:27

Never heard this before but really like it and yes Tess as a nickname if you want

BrutusMcDogface · 31/10/2021 09:27

It did seem xenophobic with the word “normal”; e.g. swap “Tesni” for “Mohammed” and then say “pick a normal name!”

Anyway. I like it. It did remind me of Tesla but I love Tess and if you have welsh roots then it’s a lovely choice.

FlightOfHares · 31/10/2021 09:28

Tesni is pronounces Tess-ny not Tezney

Tesni would have to spend his/her/its whole life explaining that it’s not Tezney it’s Tess-ny

GogLais · 31/10/2021 09:39

@FlightOfHares, it's a girl's name

Blubells · 31/10/2021 10:18

I like it.

Tesni is nicer than Tess/Theresa

CaffiSaliMali · 31/10/2021 11:26

Tesni is on my list, so I (obviously) love it! It has such a lovely meaning too. I would use Tess or Tessa as nicknames so don't see an issue with Tess as a pet form.

It's Tess-nee not Tez-ney so doesn't sound like Chesney.

Welsh names aren't abnormal so no need to worry about it not being 'normal'.

The other names on my list are Alys, Eira and Mari.
@Namechangedforthethousandthtim, Wales is part of the UK. Some posters on here might live in Wales

And yes it did seem xenophobic.

If you are welsh-speaking @Narnianoon, use it, but if you just want to Tess it is a perfectly nice name in itself.
Do you know the meaning of xenophobic? Because it definitely doesn't mean "someone who personally doesn't like the sound of one single name that comes from a country, and who expresses that opinion when asked about the name."

HTH.

SirVixofVixHall · 31/10/2021 11:32

Are you Welsh OP ?
If not, then no.

SoupDragon · 31/10/2021 11:36

Except that isn't what the poster said. She said "pick a normal name" implying that Welsh names aren't "normal". So, yes" it does come cross as xenophobic.

GogLais · 31/10/2021 11:46

@Namechangedforthethousandthtim, yes I do know the meaning.

It is a normal name, and I agree with @SoupDragon.

CaffiSaliMali · 31/10/2021 11:58

It's the inference that Welsh names aren't normal which comes across as xenophobic.

Nothing wrong with someone not liking a particular Welsh name but there's a world of difference between saying 'I think there are nicer Welsh names out there' and 'pick a normal name'.

On the Welsh side of my family we have people with names like Ffion, Llinos, Mari, Elin, Tomos, Huw, Lowri, Siôr and Llŷr.

Those names are just as normal to us as names like William, Annie, Frances, Sophie and Molly are to the English side of my family.

GogLais · 31/10/2021 13:00

Those are nice names on both sides Caff

Narnianoon · 31/10/2021 16:01

Thanks for your comments everyone.

The idea that names which you are unfamiliar with are in some way not 'normal' seems pretty ignorant to me.

I wouldn't describe myself as Welsh although I do have Welsh heritage and I am learning the language - not that I think it really matters.

Not sure whether I'll use the name, but I still think it's pretty. Thanks for the other suggestions x

Narnia, I too am dysgu siarad cymraeg. My Mam's Welsh, from a Welsh speaking family. I have a Welsh name (in England) and love it. Most people respond very positively to it and I get a lot of compliments.

If you like Tesni, use it. It's a beautiful name with a beautiful meaning.

Also, if you want a Welsh name somewhere in your DC's name, this is a link to the Welsh top 100 names for 2020 (towards the bottom) - there's a decent smattering of Welsh names in there: www.britishbabynames.com/blog/2021/10/top-100-most-popular-names-in-england-and-wales-2020.html

I think there are some really gorgeous Welsh names but this one sounds like a brand name or make of car. Tess is lovely though.

EishetChayil · 31/10/2021 18:20

Love it!
