Which do you prefer?

And what middle name would you pick to go with your choice?

I quite like Marianne. I really like Mariella to throw another into the mix.

I think if you’re both from the UK, Marianne is lovely. Is one of you has a connection to a country where Mariana is the version used (eg in Latin America) then it makes sense to use that one? Both lovely options though.

One of us is from the UK, one of us is from another country, and we live in a third different country, so in terms of what works best - anything really!

I'd pronounce Mariana as Marry-arna and Marianna as Marry-anna, which I definitely prefer. My niece is called Marianne, and I love it.

Marian(n)a is a bit too frilly and it reminds me of marijuana.

I know a Mariarna and she is of Portuguese descent, she is a lovely generous kind person. Marianne is much more ‘English’ so depends on your preference really!

I actually love exotic sounding Mariana - it reminds me of the Shakespeare character, although Marianne reminds me of the Austen one . I'd probably decide based on your surname - if it's a very long/ 3 or 4 syllable one Marianne might sound better (but both are lovely choices).

Middle name - I'd chose a friend or family name to honour that isn't too long and doesn't also end in an a/ah (for Mariana) or an n (for Marianne).

On the basis of anna v arna pronunciation issues I would stick to Marianne, which is very pretty as it is.

Marianne for me. It's one of those names that I think goes with pretty much any middle name you like - apart from Mary/Marie or Anne/Ann!

Both are very nice. I feel Marianne is slightly more classic, but Mariana is very elegant. Marianne can take a slightly longer middle name than Mariana imo. Perhaps:

Marianne Felicity

or

Mariana Grace
