Best friend is torn between these two boy names for new baby:

Zach

Luke

Any thoughts?

Luke. It's much more unusual these days.

BikeRunSki · 24/10/2021 15:23

Luke

There are Zach/Zak/Zacs all over the place.
Also, Luke is a full name.

SummerHouse · 24/10/2021 15:24

Luke.

daisypond · 24/10/2021 15:34

Luke.
Zach isn’t a full name, and there are loads of them.

DoodleBelle · 24/10/2021 15:35

Luke

Like, lovely strong name that you don't hear much.

Zach, nice too but a bit popular.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/10/2021 15:37

Luke not like.

I prefer Zach.

Just a note on popularity, if that’s a concern. While Zac- names might are popular now (though they seem to have peaked about ten years ago). Luke entered the top hundred in 1974 and only left last year. That’s a huge number of Lukes, and while he might not share a classroom with one, he’ll only be with his own age group for a short period of his life. When he starts work, the cumulative effect of decades of Lukes might make his name duplicated more. Also worth noting that Lucas and Luca are both in the top 50, and there were more boys born whose names started with Luca-, than with Zac- in 2020, so while the name Luke has gone down in popularity, the sound hasn’t.

Zach. I've never liked the name Luke.

Nearlytheretrees · 24/10/2021 15:59

Zach

dotsandco · 24/10/2021 16:00

I've never taught a Zac/Zach/Zachary in all my 28 years of teaching (primary).

Luke, on the other hand...I've actually lost count, and while it's been a few years since my last 'Luke', it's been replaced with Luc/Luca/Lucas 🤷‍♀️

I do prefer Luke though to be fair, but both names are nice. I would say though, that if she's going for Zach, at least use 'Zachary' on his birth certificate.

DoucheCanoe · 24/10/2021 16:06

I prefer Zach but if popularity is an issue i'd ask around in your area, we know at least 8 under 10. Doesn't bother me so much but I know some don't like that!

Luke is nice too and I haven't met one in 18 years working with kids, I've met 2 or 3 Lucas' and only ever met one Luca.
