If you weren't in the UK and were raising your children in a country where The Little Mermaid wasn't well known, would you consider Ursula a usable name?

Is Susannah pretty, or dated?

Do you prefer Beatrice or Beatrix?

Do you prefer Cassian, Caspian, or Cassius?

Thank you Smile

  1. My only cultural reference for Ursula is Phoebe's horrible twin in Friends. That would put me off somewhat but not much. I really like the "little bear" meaning. The Little Mermaid would never cross my mind.
  2. Susannah is fresh and exciting not dated at all. Sue and Susie are both dated though.
  3. I prefer Beatrice but don't dislike Beatrix.
  4. Caspian > Cassian > Cassius (mainly because of the Clay connection). I really love Casimer as well though.

Which country are you in? I might have seen the little mermaid years ago, but have no idea who the characters were, nor would I associate any of those names!

Ursula- I think of a plump, middle aged, German or Eastern European woman. I don't like it at all.

Susannah- its ok, but not sure about that spelling. Its also retro 70's, rather than being old enough for a revamp

Beatrice

Cassius- reminds me of Mohammed Ali. Caspian/Cassian- although not exactly the same, but I think of Casper the ghost!

First thing I think of when I hear Ursula is Pheobe's evil twin in friends. I do think it gives of bad character vibes.

Susannah can't decide, susie is cute, but Susan too old lady. I'm a 90s baby and had a Suzanne in my class at college, she went by Suze or Suzanne. If you like the "Annah" what about Anastasia or Alannah?

I think I prefer Beatrice, I live Bea, I think it's the trix I can't get on board with.

Love Cassian, however do know of a little Cassius and it's a cute name

Onlinedilema · 24/10/2021 06:55

Ursula I like. I don't know anyone called it.
Susannah is fine much better than Susan.
Caspian has sea connotations for me. If go with Cassius I think as I've never heard of Cassian.
Prefer Beatrice.

Standrewsschool · 24/10/2021 07:50

Ursula - unusual
Susannah - due a revival
Beatrice
Caspian

Standrewsschool · 24/10/2021 07:51

Cassius - always think of Cassius Clay, ie, Mohammed Ali

itssquidstella · 24/10/2021 07:55

I really like Úrsula and think it's useable in the UK.

Susannah is fine, quite pretty but not very exciting.

Beatrix better than Beatrice but both are lovely.

Cassian, then Cassius. Caspian too C.S. Lewis.

TheSpiral · 24/10/2021 07:58

Ursula - not keen myself but don’t think it is unusable
Beatrice
Caspian, in terms of how it sounds, although it’s very Narnia. Then Cassius.

TheSpiral · 24/10/2021 07:58

Oh, and Susannah is pretty

ILoveAnOwl · 24/10/2021 08:06

I was all set to have a Susannah who would've been known as Zannah. Changed my mind at the last minute and still regret it a bit.

Not keen on Ursula, like Beatrice abd Caspian.

Dinosauria · 24/10/2021 08:13

Susannah is lovely, nn could also be anna/Annie.

I like all the boy suggestions, slightly prefer Caspian. Casper is another one.

Imhereforthecake · 24/10/2021 08:16

Ursula - it's my mil name and she fits the character association with the little mermaid perfectly Blush
I like Susie not so much Susannah
Like all the rest.
You will find people that love/hate whatever name you choose, as long as it isn't something outrageous - go with what you like Smile

daisypond · 24/10/2021 10:06

Ursula is DH Lawrence and Ursula Brangwen to me - a fine character. I just re-read Little Mermaid and there’s no Ursula in it.

RuthW · 24/10/2021 11:05

Ursula a usable name? Personally I think it's an ugly name, sorry.

Is Susannah pretty, or dated? Lovely, not dated.

Do you prefer Beatrice or Beatrix? Love both

Do you prefer Cassian, Caspian, or Cassius? Probably Cassian but like all of them.

Crunchymum · 24/10/2021 11:47

Ursula - could work. Not to my personal taste.
Susannah - a little dated but quite nice
Prefer:
Beatrix and Cassian

campion · 24/10/2021 11:56

Ursula - German isn't it? It's OK

Susannah - lovely classic name. I prefer it without the 'h'. I know two and they only go by their full name - and it's not a problem!

I slightly prefer Beatrix but both fine.

I'm afraid the Cassius trio just looks a bit pretentious to me. But anything goes these days so don't let it put you off!

KirstenBlest · 24/10/2021 12:54

Ursula - ok, but some say Urshula and that would put me off

Is Susannah pretty, or dated? - pretty

Do you prefer Beatrice or Beatrix? - Beatrice

Do you prefer Cassian, Caspian, or Cassius? - Caspian, then Cassius.

Rivergypsyy · 24/10/2021 13:06

I’m not a fan of Ursula

Susannah is beautiful

Beatrice

Cassian
