I went to school with one, never met another one since. I was born in the 70s.

It’s dated, a bit second rate, and really lacks substance.

Passably OK as a nickname.

Peggytheredhen · 06/10/2021 07:52

Sorry but I think it's terrible. It seems to have had had a slight moment in the sixties, and not before or since.

SugarPlum10 · 06/10/2021 07:56

Agree with PPs, Lucinda as the full name.

Tal45 · 06/10/2021 08:39

I agree Lucinda with nn Cindy. Cindy gives me a picture in my head of a blonde looks obsessed woman who only wears pink and pretends she's not very clever because she thinks it's cute. Lucinda on the other hand sounds classy and quite unusual to me. Could also be shorted to Luce or Lucy.

BubbleCoffee · 06/10/2021 08:55

It's a doll isn't it?

Sindy was the British answer to Barbie.

For some reason it makes me think of an American sitcom "mom". I had to think for a minute but it might be because the parents on the original Beverly Hills 90210 are Cindy and Jim.

I know a few French Cindys, not short for anything, all 20s-early 30s. I think it had a spike there sometime around the '90s, but Cindy and Cynthia nn Cindy were popular earlier in the US and probably other English-speaking countries (50s-60s).

I don't see a reason not to use it if you love it, but I'd probably go with a longer name as the "official" name to give more flexibility as an adult. There's not really a lot you can do with Cindy besides Cin.

emmathedilemma · 06/10/2021 11:18

It's terrible (sorry), definitely dated American.

ladycarlotta · 06/10/2021 12:48

I think it's kind of fun. I'd put Lucinda as the full name. I do know a Cindy short for Cynthia, in her 50s.

Zeropointzero · 06/10/2021 15:05

Awful name.I associate the name with a doll, a Bimbo etc.

SeanChailleach · 06/10/2021 15:59

Weird that y'all assume the doll was a bimbo. Why wouldn't she have been a doctor or an engineer?
I do know of a Cinderella. Last seen revising for scary set of A levels.
Cyndi Lauper is a terrific role model too. Actually that's my favourite spelling.

IShoveLula · 06/10/2021 16:11

I like it.

PricklesTheHedgehog · 06/10/2021 16:18

Cindy sounds like an airhead.

Cyndi Lauper's government name, as they say in the US, is Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper Thornton.

Because some of us are old enough to have had Sindys... or to have looked at them in the catalog at Christmas and then chosen the Etch-a-Sketch or Spirograph instead. Grin She was less the bimbo than a trainee housewife IIRC.
(I wanted the Sindy horse and stable though, but they were far too expensive. )

peaceinourtime · 08/10/2021 11:33

It's nice and you don't have use a longer name to shorten in to Cindy. Cindy is fine on its own.

Confusednewmum1 · 09/10/2021 22:49

Cindy - the name just makes me think of ugly smelly people

Zipper666 · 09/10/2021 23:42

Lucinda for the documents, Cindy for home and friends.
If she chooses a profession, law or medicine, then the long version would work best...

TurnUpTurnip · 09/10/2021 23:45

I actually like it!

AuntDympna · 10/10/2021 07:31

Sindy was the grown-up doll, wasn't she? I had one like that, but I think her name was Tammy or Trixie. I wasn't into dolls, so my brother borrowed her to go on missions with Action Man. They mostly used to break hostage situations iirc

Cindi85 · 10/10/2021 07:37

I absolutely love it. Not sure why, I once taught a Cindy and just thought- what a great name. It was vetoed by dh but I would have had it.
